Hidden Snare

Proverbs 29:25 (NIV) Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.

Fear is a snare. It is a trap that keeps us from the safety and security of peace. It swallows up copious amounts of time with stress, worry and anxiety rather than love, peace and joy. Fear of anything other than the Lord does not produce a single thing of worth in our life but robs us of precious minutes. “Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?” (Matthew 6:27) I wonder if the psalmist in Psalm 25 was talking about fear when he wrote, “The Lord confides in those who fear him; he makes his covenant known to them. My eyes are ever on the Lord, for only he will release my feet from the snare.” (Psalm 25:14-15)

The enemy wants to convince you today that God doesn’t love his people unconditionally. He tries to convict us with lies and half-truths using the Word of God in a twisted and tainted fashion. Religion concocts remedies to keep pride alive and the façade of control while people are ravaged by such antidotes. Fear of man…or anything else for that matter will prove to be a snare for God’s People. Faith is the only thing that can overcome fear. It comes at the price of seeing to believe. It is a radical form of trust in a Living God who is not perceived by our senses but known by our heart.

Job 1:6-11 (NIV) One day the angels came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them. The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.” Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.” “Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.”

Job 2:3-4 (NIV) Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.” “Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give all he has for his own life. 

The “even-ifs” of life are those moments when despite trial, trouble or tragedy, hope remains steadfastly anchored in God alone. Job experienced times like this. He lost everything of value and worth including his children in a single day. The next day, after proving his love and devotion to the Lord – his body afflicted. The Lord allowed it. We know in the end God restored Job and gave him a double portion blessing but oh what a price he paid in the fire of refinement. Maybe you remember three Hebrew men – Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.

Daniel 3:16-18 (NIV) Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”

“But even if he does not, we want you to know…we will not serve other gods.” Our confidence in God must grow to larger than our fear of other things. Even if He (the Lord) does not, we will not serve another. Such confident trust that even in death, our complete and absolute trust is in the Lord. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, we must make it through today.

Some points of interest in Job’s Account is that Satan went before the Lord in the heavenlies. God is fully aware of the enemy and his earthly activities. Secondly, the enemy asked for permission to tempt the man of God. Why in the world would the Lord allow such a thing? My faith in the Lord must be genuine. When the hedge of protection is secure and everything is going good, it isn’t that hard to be faithful to the Lord. However, when all hell breaks loose in our life, what happens next is true revelation. Even if, God doesn’t deliver me what will I do about it?

Romans 8:14-16 (NIV) For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 

You are a child of the Living God. You have every reason to live a fearless life. However, total faith in the absence of fear does not exempt you from fiery trials. In fact, it turns up the furnace seven times hotter. True repentance should produce real faith. Faith that withstands trial, trouble or even tragedy is real and genuine. It is said to be more valuable than gold. The Spirit of God gives us liberty from fear, worry, stress and anxiety but it is up to the individual the role taken in life. The sons and daughters of God are not in bondage. There is no enslavement for Christ but rather servanthood as His Beloved. Who the Son sets free is free indeed – first and foremost from fear that hinders our faith. But can we say, “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” (Romans 8:18)

Romans 8 goes on to say…

Romans 8:28 (NIV)  And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. 

Are you wondering today – how can any good come from this? Why would God allow such a thing to happen to me? Where is He when I need Him most? Fear whispers such terrible lies but the Truth God is with us. His Word will not return to Him void which includes this one. He will never let the righteous fall. I could go on and on with the Truth that refutes the lie of the enemy challenging the Sovereignty and Constancy of God.

Romans 8:37-39 (NIV) No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Perfect love drives out fear. (I John 4:18) The more we seek to know the Lord and His Word, the less likely it is that we will fall for the lies, traps and snares of the enemy. The Light of His Love illuminates our way so that we can overstep and bypass them. The Promise is that we are more than conquerors so even if we must fight the good fight of faith there is nothing to fear. We win. We will be victorious simply because Christ overcame the world. He is our Beloved who gives us victory after victory. There is nothing that can separate us from the Love of God. What can make us depart from it today? Usually fear is focused in that area, the thing that we just cannot seem to trust God with. Is it your family? Your finances? Your future? Whatever it is should be evident to you. It is the place where fear constantly challenges your faith. Where you feel the least hope and struggle with confidence in God. It is the place where the enemy lays his most intricate traps and seeks the Lord’s permission to challenge you on a regular basis.

2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV) For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

His Grace is enough! It is always sufficient. Grace gives us access to God’s Power. You have the power to overcome the enemy including every lie he tries to feed you today. Do not feed your fears. Let God’s Word feed your faith today. His Love is unconditional. You can never blow it with God in a way that cannot be overcome by His Grace. His Power is always available to us. His Love for us complete without our contribution. Finally, self-discipline is the key to overcoming fear each day. We have God’s Spirit alive and well on the inside of us. It is up to us if He will be in control of our mind, will and emotions today. Will I allow God’s Spirit to stir my faith and build strong confidence in Christ or will I let fear take over? I choose faith today. How about you? Lord, reveal all my fears to me today so that I may strive to apply faith to them. Every snare, trap and lie the enemy has laid before me so by faith I can leap over them into Your Waiting Arms. Let me live fearlessly in love with You!

You unravel me with a melody…You surround me with a song… Of deliverance from my enemies…’Til all my fears are gone. I’m no longer a slave to fear…I am a Child of God!

2 Corinthians 10:4-6 (NIV)  For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.

We have divine power to demolish strongholds. We can demolish every argument and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God. We don’t do it on social media, in great debates, laced with human opinion. Yes, I said it. Like throwing stones over a wall, it is easier to point on the failed logic of another than face our own walls and abatements head-on. The war to be one is in our own mind. We cannot convince another person of God’s Love, Grace and Mercy until first finding Him faithful for ourselves. All the times that I have read these verses, I guess I missed the part about me. It begins in me. It begins by trusting God enough to live by the Truth and expose every lie keeping me from a closer relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

The natural definition of stronghold is a well-fortified place. The Spirit-Filled Bible commentary says this: “Strongholds are first established in the mind: that is why we are to take every thought captive. Behind a stronghold is a lie – a place of personal bondage where God’s Word has been subjugated to         (under the complete control of or subject to or conquered by) any unscriptural idea or personally confused belief that is held to be true. Behind every lie is a fear, behind every fear is an idol. Idols are established wherever there exists a failure to truss tin the provisions of God that are ours through Jesus Christ.” I have been chewing on this for a while. We do not fight for victory but from a place of victory.

John 8:44 (NIV) You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

According to John 1:14, Jesus is the Word of God who arrived in flesh to dwell with us. We have seen the Glory of God in His Son full of grace and truth. However, the Word of God that is truth is constantly challenged by the father of lies who is always sowing seeds of doubt in the form of lies. Lies upon lies that seem logical and plausible compared to current conditions in life. It is up to us as believers to discern the Truth from lies. Easier said than done when the enemy knows God’s Word and uses it against us. Lack of knowledge can bring about death in the heart of a believer. Eve heard God speak directly. However, when the enemy challenged the truth with a lie – she decided to take the lie to have the immediate gratification of fruit that it offered. Thankfully – we have the example of Jesus who when led to the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted – effectively used the Word of God to dismiss every lie the enemy offered Him. It is important to evaluate our belief in life and decide “who told you that”? God asked Adam and Eve the very same question after sin entered the garden that day.

I John 1:5-7 (NIV) This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

When our youngest child was about four or five, she asked if Santa Claus was a real person. She wanted to know if he really went to every house bring gifts on Christmas Eve. If you knew our child, you would know she thrives on truth. She basks in knowledge. Google is her best friend when she needs information fast. I said to her, “You know that once you know the truth you cannot continue to believe a lie.” Her response, “I knew he wasn’t real.” How many times do we know the truth but do not want to live by it. In her case, she was afraid to reveal her disbelief because someone had told her that she wouldn’t get gifts anymore. How many times do we do the very same thing? How often do we live in disappointment rather than taking a chance on hope? How often do we build walls to house our insecurity than to walk fearlessly from victory to victory? As we rode in the car a little while longer, I was concerned that she might not believe in the reality of Jesus Christ if Santa wasn’t real so I asked her, “You know that Jesus is real right?” She said, “Oh yes, I know HE is real!” What a relief!

Truth is elusive in the natural. Before you balk, when was the last time you used a picture on social media without a filter or didn’t take it 20 times before choosing one to post? I am not judging anyone I promise. I use filters all the time in more ways than one. However, to live in the Light of God’s Love requires complete honesty. His Light makes us transparent before Him. We claim to live in the Light but often have secret lives lived in secret places unbeknownst even to ourselves. God sees right through it. Nothing is hidden from Him. We must strive to live honest and open lives before the Lord to give credibility to our faith and fortify our hope.

Hebrews 4:12 (NIV) For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

The Word of God cuts through every lie. It exposes the Truth about us and works it in us. It penetrates to divide our soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It sheds glorious light in the darkest places. We are all subject to such a process that compares our thoughts, ideas and believes to the Word of God challenging every mindset not found there. This is how we change our expectation from the natural to supernatural. If you knew what the Word of God said about your life and believed that it truly belonged to you – it would change your heart and mind!

God’s Word is seed in our life. It is grows into fruitful abundance.  As our soul prospers so does our life. Are you sowing God’s Word in the open recesses of your heart today? Are you allowing the Light of His Love to penetrate the carefully constructed walls housing insecurity and fear that His Word is not for you, maybe that He could not possibly love you or that your sin is too heinous to forgive? All lies. Every single one of them. Even religion and traditions handed down through generations become watered down truth and potential lies. (Mark 7:9-14) There is no way to know our true identity in Jesus Christ outside of God’s Word. Our spirit is empowered by it. The Holy Spirit uses it as a weapon to defend our growing faith and blossoming potential.

Romans 1:20-21(NIV)  For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.

Romans 1:25 (NIV) They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

The Word of God is the logic of faith. You will never know what you believe as a Christian outside of God’s Word and its application. You will never know the blessings and promises that belong to you if you do not seek them out and decide to have them. God makes Himself fully available to us. We must simply know who and what we are looking for so when a lie presents itself it is easily identified by the Truth living in us.

In our office, there is a picture of a deer. It is elementary sketching in pencil. The owner of the company tells the story of his mother’s love for yard and estate sales. She came across this picture and bought it for a couple dollars. What the original owner did not know is that this was an original sketch by artist, Salvador Dali. A valuable piece of art sitting with other common household items and junk people were just trying to get rid of. I wonder how many times that God has things intended for our life yet we exchange the process of truth for the immediate gratification offered in the lie? More than I care to know and enough that I intend to change…

God calls you His Masterpiece. God doesn’t make junk. The process of God begins with changing our mind and accepting a new identity as Child of the Living God. The father of lies is no longer in charge of parenting you. You have a Good Father who sees your great potential. He promises to work every detail of your life into that good for His Glory. What if the very thing holding you back is a stronghold in your mind seeded by the enemy long ago marked for eradication by God in order to prosper your life? We must allow God to change our mind through His Word before we can change the world for Him. Lord, expose every lie I have allowed to live in me and shed Your Light Glorious Light upon it. In Jesus Name…AMEN!

Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV) Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Romans 8:1 (NKJV) There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

The enemy of all mankind will use just about any bat handed to him. He is aggressive and ruthless in his attack against humanity. He hates people. So when given the opportunity to remind us of faults, failures and shortcomings – he capitalizes completely. Given our inability to earn salvation or restore our relationship with God outside of Christ creates a vulnerability to these tactics. Shame and regret are his biggest enforcers of our insecurity and inability to own our new relationship with God through His Son. We are no longer condemned but empowered by God’s Grace to become new creations. If only we could see the Gloriousness of God and His Goodness concerning us to silence the lie of the enemy in our life.

God doesn’t wait with a huge sledgehammer to smash us when we sin. In fact, our sin grieves God. His Hate for sin doesn’t extend to the offenders. He only hates sin not those who live in it. Unconditional love is probably the greatest love of all and easiest to maintain if our heart would only receive it and our head able to conceive it. Hurt and betrayal harden our heart to such a thing in light of our own broken emotions. This limits the Body of Christ in fully filling each position. It hinders the Kingdom coming to earth in disbelief. God wants to break the stronghold of condemnation over your life. Whether promoted by religion or simply a lack of knowledge. He wants to break through this barrier and free you from this hindrance in your life. God is good. He wants His Glory to fill us to overflowing…despite what we may think of ourselves?

John 3:18-20 (NKJV) “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.

Why does God love me? How do I know that He does? How can I be sure? Well, the Word of God tells us that God is love (I John 4:8) and He first loved us (I John 4:19)! God’s Word is the credibility of my faith and the logic that I must live by to successfully overcome every lie introduced by the enemy. I must believe God’s Word is for me and about me. I must allow His Spirit to sow the Word in my heart so it will become the wisdom of my life. Jesus is the Word of God who came wrapped in flesh to demonstrate God’s Love and Desire for me. (John 1:14) The Love of God for mankind is who He is. We cannot make God love us because He already does. His Mercy each day delivered to everyone regardless of what they believe and how they live is evidence that His Love will stop at nothing to apprehend us.

The only condemnation is disbelief. To refuse the Love of God given in His Son Jesus Christ is the only condemnation possible for people. When presented with the Light of His Love, yet they choose darkness rather than light. Aha! Said all the religious people with a Pharisee-spirit in them. No this does not mean that sinners are condemned but rather those who do not desire a relationship with God. The application of grace does not mean that a person is no longer a sinner just forgiven. Doing some things right (or religiously) does not promote you to a higher level in God. In fact, the more humble the person the closer to God. Those who reject His Love. This is very different that feeling unworthy or insignificant. There are a whole lot of people in the world who entered our churches and rather than experiencing the selfless and unconditional love of God – they were condemned by Christians and wandered empty and helplessly back into the darkness. Shame on us for putting a higher price on our love than God puts on His Love. He stops at nothing to make a way for us to enter right standing and promote a restored relationship with even the most violent offender.

2 Corinthians 3:7-10 (NKJV) But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious? For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory. For even what was made glorious had no glory in this respect, because of the glory that excels.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) This is one of the most known verses in the Word of God. God loved us. He sent His Son to save us. But there is more to the story that is relevant and true. “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” The purpose of Christ was not two-fold. He did not come to save some and condemn others. God is never double-minded. Jesus came that the world might be saved and have everlasting life. There is no condemnation in Christ today. If you feel condemned, it is not from God. God is love! His Mercy is new every morning. He loved you first. He loves you the most. His Grace is enough to gain access to every blessing and experience His Glory in your life. You don’t have to do everything right just love His Son and believe in Him for salvation. A brand new life as a new creation is only accessible through Christ. He gives it to us with a helper that will help us in our weakness. Take knowledge and turn into wisdom. There is no sin insurmountable to an ounce of Christ’s Precious Blood – you are not condemned but made alive again. Resurrection life and power are working its way through you to make its way out of you. Put down the big bat of condemnation, shame, guilt or any other lie that the enemy handed you today. You have a purpose and plan designed for you by the Hand of God. The whole point is that you will know His Love. Gird yourself in the Truth that God loves you. Jesus died for you! His Grace is enough for you! You are alive again! Now walk in that freedom! Live in His Glory! He is for you! Never ever not once against you! Jesus is Our Champion – claim your victory today!

John 16:33 (NIV) “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

John 8:31-32 (NLT) Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

There have been some who criticize my writing because it can be lengthy. The suggestion has been made to only reference the Word of God rather than including full passages of scripture. I have been doing this for about eight years now. I have thought about these words and carefully considered others opinions and I have come to the conclusion that I just cannot do it. The Word of God is absolutely essential to our daily life as a believer. Early in my Christian walk, I struggled reading the Bible. It seemed repetitive and boring. It wasn’t a story but excerpts of history. It didn’t seem logical. I couldn’t make it applicable to my life or so I thought. I am an avid reader though I will admit I have a pile of books that are left unread. I have produced one out of five children who also loves books and a second on the proverbial fence. My other three children abhor it. We must read, digest and implement the Word of God in our life to live in true freedom as a believer. Without it, there is potential and purpose in our life that will go undiscovered and unrealized simply due to ignorance.

Matthew 4:3-4 (NLT) During that time the devil came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (Deuteronomy 8:3)

Jesus was led to the wilderness by the Holy Spirit where He would be tempted. The enemy cannot touch a single hair on the head of God’s Children unless God allows it. But before you get all up in arms, not everything that occurs in our life is at the direct hand of the enemy as much as people love to blame him. The enemy simply offers suggestions and opportunities in the form of temptation to stray from our faith, belief and dependency on God to have our own way. There are consequential conditions as a direct result of sowing and reaping. There are things that happen due to our unwillingness to change or be changed as a reaction to our action. The Lord has given us freedom to choose our way. Those who decide to follow the Way, Truth and Life will have the condition added that God will work all things together for our good. Sin introduced evil, perversity and sickness into this world and Jesus has overcome them all giving us a better and more excellent way. Sickness may end in death but to a true believer it means stepping into forever with the Lord. The world shapes our perspective to consider more than this life and see past the temporary trials of today. Less I digress…

In the story of Jesus experiencing temptation from the enemy firsthand, He overcame every one with the Word of God. He simply repeated back to Satan the Truth which nullifies the lie. Ignorance is never bliss. It can be death even to those who think they are serving the Lord faithfully but miss out on the One who overcomes death and the grave. I can understand the concept of sowing and reaping. It can increase and add abundance to my life. Without Jesus, it is just evidence of God’s Constant Character and Solid Sovereignty but without the Word – I can never go farther than provisional principle. I want a covenant relationship with God the Father so I must go through the Son.

John 1:1-5 (NLT) In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.

 

John 1:10-14 (NLT) He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God. So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.

Our daughter lives in the New England area. She and a friend were driving through the city. The story goes that our daughter screamed stopped the car and jumped out unto the crowded street. She runs up to a complete stranger and asks him for a picture. They snap a selfie thanking him she hops in the car and drives off with her friend. She posts the pic on social media all excited about the encounter and calls me to share her story. The actor is from a famous sitcom. I don’t watch television much other than thee occasional real estate or home improvement show. I have just lost interest in it and would rather do other things. At any rate, her shock was clear that I did not know this person and that I didn’t recognize his name. Her story was not very exciting to me other than I could tell she was excited. Now her husband was a different story, the actor was actually one of his favorites and she took the picture for him. He is probably still fan-guying over the whole episode. Do you know Jesus Christ? Who He is? What He came to do? His Place in the Trinity? How He feels about you? Do you really know the Lord?

Jesus is the Word of God. He was the spoken word that created the world and universe all around us. He is the very breath breathed in us that gives us life. He is the One who once believed and accepted will make us Children of God. He is full of unfailing love and faithfulness – the two qualities all of humanity search for and never find among the people who populate the planet. He is hidden in a book on the dusty shelf or Bible tucked neatly away reserved for Sundays, Wednesdays or the occasional small group…if that. The Lord said in the Old Testament that people will actually die from a lack of knowledge. The New Living Translation puts it like this – “My people are being destroyed because they don’t know me.” (Hosea 4:6) God wasn’t just talking about “lost folk” in this passage. No, it was about priests who had “forgotten the laws of your God”.  Some people think they know Jesus but when they die will be devastated to find they didn’t know Him at all.

John 4:23-24 (NLT) But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

True worshippers. I want to be a true worshipper. I want to know Jesus more intimately and completely than even my husband who I know very well. We have been married a long time. Shared almost two decades together. He is my beloved. We have developed a marriage that is a partnership. Strived for two to become one even though sometimes it was a struggle and fight to the death of self that yielded two people willing to stick it out together come what may. I married this man knowing that God had given Him to me even though I met Him when I was living in the wilderness of the world. Sitting at a table in a loud crowded restaurant, I heard the Lord. I knew this was the one God sent for me. However, that didn’t mean that there would not be challenges along the way. In fact, I think the fact that we dedicated our lives and marriage to the Lord from the start even before fully coming back to God painted a bright red target on our backs. Our love for each and desire for God kept us in the fight. I cannot expect a solid marriage to Jesus Christ if I do not take the time to get to know Him. To decide that He is the One for me. To see that sweetness of His Love and full potential of His Character in my life. Salvation is an invitation to intimacy. His Presence is offered to everyone but when you arrive it is a One-on-One experience just you and Jesus. It is private. It is personal. It is intimate. You must decide your level of commitment to this covenant offered to you by Jesus Christ. Are you willing to lay it all down to pick up your Cross and follow Him? A disciple does that. To be His Disciple is to know the Truth and let the Truth set you free.

We must worship is Spirit and in Truth. The Spirit is in us waiting to take the Word of God and work it through our life. The Word does not make sense without the Spirit and the Spirit has nothing to work with outside of the Word. To live by the Spirit and ignore the Word creates a double standard and you will soon be frustrated by a lack of results. To read the Word and ignore the Person of the Holy Spirit is to apply a principle without any power. It is like plugging a power cord into a dead outlet. It just won’t work. It must all a work together. God is three persons. Father, Son and Spirit. We need them all to successfully discover the Truth and allow it to become our freedom.

Hebrews 4:12-14 (NLT) For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable. So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe.

When satan tempted Eve in the Garden, he did not come at her with a bold-faced obvious lie but a deviation of the truth. It was subtle. Cunning. Seemed logical. The enemy is sneaky. He doesn’t knock us off course but entices us to settle or compromise just a little. He tries to refute God’s Word on the tiniest detail. The Word of God is alive. His Name is Jesus! He lives in us. His Grace is enough so even when we fall for the enemy’s lie – the Truth will come to save us and set us free. We need the Word of God to serve the Lord with passion. We know Jesus through the Word because He is the Word. Faith is not logical outside of the Word of God. So without it, we will never understand this life we live, what to believe, or how to share Good News yet to be discovered. We cannot hold firmly to what or more importantly who we believe until we know Him. We cannot know Him without the Spirit AND Truth. You will never know what He has done for you until you know what He has promised. You will not recognize hope that never leads to disappointment until deciding that faith is worth the investment of time and energy ready, studying and digesting the Word of God. This is how Biblical Knowledge becomes Spiritual Truth that is our belief system. You will never know what you have until You get to know WHO He is!

Know the Truth. The Truth will set you free. This world is limited by darkness, sin and evil. The Word allows us to overstep the natural into the supernatural – not when we die but now. In this life, you can live totally free according to God’s Word and His Kingdom. The enemy builds barriers and obstacles in our life out of deceptive lies and half-truths that rob us of God’s Greatest Blessings. It is like being held captive in an unlocked cell. If he can convince you not to try the door or even shake it a little, the enemy can rob you of the love, joy and peace found in the Word of God our resting place. He can keep us from the blessings, prosperity, abundance and increase that comes from sowing God’s Word, watering it, waiting for it and harvesting all of His Promises and Blessings for us. You have been given a gift far greater than you will ever know trying to recognize and receive in the limitations of human thinking. With God all things are possible to those who believe. Do you believe? What do you believe? The Word of God will show you what you believe now and what is possible when you put all your faith and trust in Jesus! Be free today! Grab your Bible. Invite the Holy Spirit to show you something new there! Pray a promise found in His Word. Tomorrow – do the same thing. The next day – yep repeat. In no time at all, you will see dead things coming to life – word by word, line by line and precept by glorious precept. Get in the Word. It will set you free!

I John 2:4-6 (NLT) If someone claims, “I know God,” but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth. But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.

I Peter 1:5-7 (NLT) And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see. So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while.  These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

Excuses will always be there for you. Opportunities won’t. (Unknown) Today is an opportunity to choose to believe in God’s Love. His Goodness. His Glory. His Promises. You and I have Potential and a Plan carefully constructed in all the qualities of God mentioned above. It is a choice. Your choice and my choice that is made intentionally or unintentionally by the attitudes and actions formed to respond to the challenges of each moment. An excuse is to obtain an exemption or release. Our excuses are the very things that disconnect our faith from God’s Future. Excuses are evidence that there is a lack of belief on our part to the Characteristics of God that make Him perfect in all things. When I decide not to follow the Lord, and make an excuse I eliminate the potential in that moment accepting defeat. I have reduced the Greater is He that lives in me to just not enough. Is Christ enough for you today? Is He enough to eliminate excuses and execute excellence in your life?

Dani Johnson was a young woman who suffered violence and abuse in her childhood. As a teenager, she became pregnant by a deacon’s son in her church. She gave up her baby for adoption and walked away from church for good. Or so she thought, but the seeds of God’s Words were already sown deeply in her heart. God had a plan. Her potential became evident as she was an excellent sales person with a flourishing career who married a conman who was taking her money. He abandoned her with huge amounts of debt. Dani lost her job and her home. She was living in her car with $2.03 to her name. She was depressed and contemplating suicide. It was at that very moment she felt God’s Spirit within her telling her to press on, to rise up and do something with her life. She did. She went from homeless and broken starting her first business in the backseat of her car and in two years became a millionaire at 23. She is quoted as saying, “Excuses are well planned lies!” The enemy wants to destroy all of God’s Potential in our life. He does so by offering excuses when opportunity presents itself. He hushes the Voice of God with all the reasons it won’t happen. He recalls our past. He fills the present with busyness. He discounts our future. The productivity of his cultivation are all lies that become our excuses.

Jeremiah 29:11-13 (NLT) For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.

God has a plan for your life. These moments called past and present are all with in the woven threads of the dream and vision for your life. Romans 8:28 is His Promise that even the bad ones, hard ones or those deemed to be a failure have goodness in them providing for our future. He has promised that the plan is good with a future and hope attached which I believe references this life and forever. The fruit of the Spirit cultivates good things for now and later. Our steps are divinely ordered by the Lord so even when we walk through the shadow of the valley called death there is no reason to fear. The Lord is waiting for you to respond to His Offer. Will you willingly accept His Plan or continue to wander without purpose with blinders called excuses? The secret is in verse 13 – If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. To find Him is to have all that He has promised. We will not find the Lord if we do not believe. The evidence of belief is faith. Faith to follow the Lord without excuses.

Romans 4:20-21 (NLT) Abraham never wavered in believing God’s promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God. He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever he promises.

Even though there was no reason to hope, Abraham kept hoping – believing that he would become a father despite his age. Even though – he was 100 years old and Sarah 99. Even though in the natural, Sarah’s womb would be considered dead. Abraham believed in God who brings the dead back to life. The promise of God is received by faith. Faith encounters the impossible and says, “Even though…I still believe.” This is the mindset of spiritual success. To be and do all that God promised requires this very idea to take root in our heart and mind and grow to be tree of life within us. The tree that provides the fruit to sustain us during drought seasons and times of famine when our life does not represent the purpose or potential that is God’s Plan. It is faith that meets the impossible and does not turn away but says…even though!

2 Corinthians 5:6-7 (NLT) So we are always confident, even though we know that as long as we live in these bodies we are not at home with the Lord. For we live by believing and not by seeing.

Faith is not necessary until the impossible presents itself. We are to live by believing and not seeing. It is only natural to have the “who-turned-the-lights-off” and “what-was-I-thinking-moment” in our journey. Peter had it. He was gung-ho jumping out of the boat to come to Jesus. But a few steps into it, he had an epiphany that revealed that he ran out of faith too soon. He began sinking. What happened? Jesus reached out and grabbed him. We will all experience such times when venturing off the short, dock or stepping out of the boat and walking by faith. Faith is illogical in the natural. It is uncomfortable to the flesh. If at any point in the process you dare to look down, it will absolutely suck the breath right out of you. God is ready to exceed all human expectations with His Excellent Love, Power and Providence for us.

As long as I live in this body, my faith in God will be tested. I will be given opportunity after opportunity to trust the Lord. I must surrender all of my life – heart, mind, soul and body to have all that He has planned and prepared for me including eternity. I cannot get tangled up in lies that are the foundation of excuses as to why I cannot or God will not but must live by confident faith in His Unfailing Love, Overwhelming Grace and Constant Care for me.

Hebrews 5:7-8 (NLT) While Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could rescue him from death. And God heard his prayers because of his deep reverence for God. Even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered.  

Even though Jesus was God’s Son – he learned obedience through suffering. Jesus was God incarnate. He had every component of humanity. He had body. He had a mind. He had a pulsating heart. Jesus was a man. He did not lack any of the physical qualities that you and I have so when it came to suffering the pain of heartbreak and the brutality of his beatings then the cross. Jesus experienced it just as any other person. Yet He was still the Son of the Living God. God lived in Him. How are we different? God is exercising and conditioning our faith to endure the trials and hardships of life so that we will have confident hope that can obtain resurrection power and new life. He is not picking on you. You are not being left behind. There really is no excuse for our lack of persistence in following Jesus Christ. He endured the exact same things successfully to become our example.

Romans 5:1-5 (NLT) Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory. We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.  And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.

Jesus Christ said, “It is finished.” The Lord meant every single word of this three-word statement. He released His Spirit to live in us from that moment on. Romans 1:20 tells us that God has demonstrated His Love in perfect form so that no one has a good excuse not to know Him. Your past does not define your future. Your present condition doesn’t necessarily project your future. By faith, all of this is according to God’s Plan. He offers a future and hope that is accepted by faith not excuses. God speaks to guide us. Why aren’t we listening? He gives us His Word as a rod and staff to steady our way. To discipline our steps to avoid many pitfalls. Do we read it? He is ready to communicate 24/7 through prayer yet the door to our prayer closet remains closed. The Lord asks just one thing of us to be humble enough to love others – all others. We flatly refuse to give up our position of pride to love one another.

We have the Power of the Living God available to us by His Grace – yet we choose control over surrender every day. If life is immediately gratifying – an excuse is formed while we do it ourselves rather than waiting on the Lord. If hard times come, we exit. When it’s time to press, we rebel and pull back. God is God. He is the great I Am and perfectly able to do every single thing that He promised. He works best in the form of “even though” but we choose excuses instead abandoning ship to sail in other directions afraid to get our feet wet much less sink in the waves. No trust that He will catch us, excuses form a tower that becomes a prison. A place where His Promises cannot reach us.  A cell of simply not enough. Caught up by stress, anxiety, and worry – all the while Jesus is saying come to me. I will give you rest. Where is faith in your priorities today?

Ben Franklin said, “He that is good at making excuses is seldom good at anything else.” Friend that is a stinger. Lord, I don’t want to be that person. What has the Lord laid on your heart to do? Have you abandoned ship? Have you walked away? Do you think you have a good excuse? God doesn’t believe in excuses. He is moved by our faith. The times when “even though” everything is stacked against us and the situation is impossible – we dare to believe just one more day. Or even better, take one step closer to Him by faith that God will do it anyway. These situations, circumstances or conditions that we think will break us only make room for God’s Grace to flow through us. His Grace produces His Power in the place of our weakness and supernatural strength to keep following Him even when nothing is going “right” in our own eyes. As our faith flourishes in such conditions, the hope that anchors our soul becomes a little more secure. God has a purpose for each step. Especially the hard ones, taking in absolute faith with nothing in the natural to support them. These are the ones that release His Power the most in our life. Stop making excuses and pack faith in its place. Be the one who believes “even though”. Walk by faith not by sight. The best is yet to come for those who stop making excuses and step out in faith.

Hebrews 11:6 (NLT) And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him

Romans 12:1-2 (NIV) Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

It is human nature to have lapses in judgment. Making mistakes is an unavoidable part of life. It is how we learn, grow, develop and mature or at least that’s how I think it is supposed to work. Falls are not failures but opportunities to get up. Failure is futile if one gives up and does not try again. It doesn’t matter how far we have fallen, the Lord is always there to help us up. Bad choices become learning curves when wisdom is acquired. I told one of my children who was soundly beating themselves up over a mistake that it is only wasted if wisdom is not obtained. Trials, temptations, and trouble are all lessons in life. Knowledge discovered in the midst of such things give way to a foundation of truth that can be maintained.

To offer our bodies as “living sacrifices” is not about physical obedience or cleaning up our life. To be holy and pleasing God begins with a change of heart and transformation of our mind. I can come to the altar seeking repentance day after day, but when the Lord looks into my heart it is the thought process called intent that He is after. Grace is sufficient only when it releases the Power of God in our life. If we remain in bondage due to ignorance, what is the point? No really why follow Christ if my life is no better and we are getting nowhere?

Wisdom enables us “to test and approve what God’s will is – His Good, Pleasing and Perfect Will. Knowledge is good but wisdom is better. To know what to do and not do it is futility. To know the Truth and let it set us free is beneficial. Freedom allows us to do anything, but not all things are beneficial. How do we discern?

2 Corinthians 10:4-6 (NIV) The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.

There is very real war waged for our thoughts each day. The enemy does not always have to come at us with a bold-faced lie. For the believer, He usually comes at us with twisted truth. The Word of God is turned askew just a bit. Though many are familiar with what think God’s Word says, few take the time to dig in deeper and know it. How much time do you spend in the Word of God each week? The Word of God is a two-edged sword that rightly divides the truth from all the lies that the enemy offers God’s People in exchange for His Precious Truth. (Hebrews 4:12)

No one can know the thoughts of God which are so much higher than our own (Isaiah 55:8) without knowing the Spirit of God. (I Corinthians 2:11) I was a Christian for many years in a denomination heavy in the Truth of God but that ignored His Spirit. I knew the Bible but it didn’t make any sense and I was powerless to do what it says. The biggest stronghold and obstacle in the life of any believer is ignorance. The Lord says that His People will perish when they lack it. Drawn into discouragement, despair, disagreement and dissension by slight deviations of truth their hearts and minds get lost in darkness.

We must use the divine power of God to demolish such strongholds. We must end the arguments and pretension that sets itself up against God. We must take captive every thought in our mind to be obedient to Jesus Christ. We must be ready to punish every act of disobedience. If our mind refuses to forgive, we must seek grace. If pride overtakes us, we must humble ourselves. When prejudice raises its ugly head, we must chop it off at the neck. What is prejudice? Prejudice is an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge thought or reason. We prejudge many things in life based on the knowledge base of our mind. We must change our mind and allow the Lord to renew our thoughts to see the world properly and act obediently.

Ephesians 4:17-21 (NIV)  So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed. That, however, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus.

We must no longer give in to futility of thinking. The knowledge of God is His Word and the wisdom of God is His Way. We must make it a point to search the scriptures, meditate on it allowing it to marinate our mind so that it will become our way of life. It is the very thing that indoctrinates us into the Kingdom. It is a new language called love. It is a new way called humility. It is a new life called redemption. We cannot allow ourselves to be compromised by futile and worthless thoughts. We must take the Word of God and seal our hearts with it. When the enemy comes with temptation, it will be easily identified by the heart and mind immersed in Truth, Knowledge and Wisdom of God. But that’s not all…

We must have a relationship with God to know His Intentions. A text message can be read a thousand different ways and given the same amount of emotion. Misunderstandings arise from communication that lacks relationship. We are to relate to one another, exhorting each other and bonding together to become the Body of Christ.

I Corinthians 14:18-20 (NIV) I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue. Brothers and sisters, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults.

How effective is the Gospel of Christ if it is not communicated? Can we truly expect a revival in our midst if the church cannot convey “five intelligible words to instruct others”? When I read this today, I felt convicted. It the message of our life is not “intelligible” can there be any impact? We speak Christianese and others cannot relate. They cannot see the value in our “sacrifice” because the words of our mouth and meditation of our heart do not agree. We cannot communicate the Gospel without wisdom. We must know what we believe and experience the loving transformation of a renewed mind for others to truly understand what it means to be loved by God. When we speak one thing and live another – our words are invalidated.

Philippians 4:6-9 (NIV) Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

What are you thinking? Our thoughts are born of the knowledge in our mind. What we think is influenced by what we know. If our thoughts are anxious about anything, given to things not of God or even simply unforgiving – there is room for improvement. Not to burst anyone’s bubble, but the renewing of our mind begins now and is not over until we meet Jesus face-to-face. Be careful if you think you have arrived or know more than the next guy, because a fall is just around the corner. Our minds are assaulted by the lie of the enemy day by day. God’s New Mercy allows us to surrender our heart and mind daily to His Transformation process called Grace. As we begin to change our mind, know the Truth and allow wisdom to take over – it is to our benefit and the Gospel will become clear.

2 Peter 3:1-3 (NIV) Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles. Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.

I John 3:19-22 (NIV) This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him.

 

Our mind is a powerful weapon against us sometimes. I know that there are times when a tiny thought becomes a raging fear in an instant if I allow it to remain free roaming in my imagination. Little molehills grow instantly into giant mountains simply because I did not apprehend it the moment I noticed it. Our mind represents our flesh and lives in enmity against God. It wants to do what gratifies and satisfies the natural man with little to no interest in the spiritual being that the Lord is creating with us day by day. Why? To grow spiritually means dying naturally day by day as our flesh is crucified with Christ. There are many full churches yet few prospering souls today. Going to church does not make you a Christian…or maybe it does as far as social circles go. Attending a regular worship service does not make you a worshipper. Quoting scripture does not make you a believer. Serving in the church body does not make you a servant unless love saturates your cause. We are to become followers of Jesus. We are to act like Him, talk like Him and think like Him. People act like Christians even speaking Christianese. However, to truly be like Jesus means thinking like Him or our intentions are all wrong.

 

What we think becomes what we know? What we know is turned into understanding? Understanding becomes wisdom. This fuels our thoughts and ideas in like which become our motivation. But if the original intent is all wrong, though progression is perceived purpose is lost. Jeremiah 17:10 says, “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.” You can fool other people but you cannot fool the Lord. He knows our heart. He sees our thoughts. Those who lack faith and confident hope are quickly discovered as nothing is hidden from the Lord. We must call to order our thoughts, emotions and feelings. Surrendering our life to Christ begins with our intent. If we seek to know Jesus, we must overcome the conflicted emotions within us.

 

The New Living Translation says it like this, “Even if we feel guilty, God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything.” Have you ever felt like God doesn’t notice or care about our feelings? Like he is uncaring or uncompassionate about the struggles in our heart and mind? God is greater than our feelings. The biggest deterrent for a believer is fear. When we are afraid, there are many factors that are destructive to our faith in that one word that describes most of our emotional makeup. To be afraid means any of the following: feeling fear, filled with apprehension (opposite of expectation), feeling regret, unhappiness, feeling reluctance, unwillingness, and distaste. We are afraid of the unknown for if we would seek to know God and develop a relationship with Jesus Christ, we were never be afraid again. Fear is a feeling. It is an emotional response to the lie of the enemy. It is natural since our flesh is slowing dying giving way to a new life, new confidence in our hope and learning to respond in faith. It is uncomfortable. It is not easy but oh so worth it when we decide that God is definitely greater than our feelings.

 

Romans 7:21-25 (NLT) I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.

 

I love how Paul laid it all out for us. Our mind is at war with God’s Will for our life. It does not and will not submit to God’s Law willingly hence creating hostility in us. We are conflicted. If there is the slightest spark of desire to know the Lord, stinking thinking tries to convince us that God doesn’t love us, cannot overcome our sin, and will not change our life because of what we have done. It all began with a lie. Just a subtle twist on God’s Word, and sin brought humanity crashing down. We are not so different from our ancestors, Adam and Eve. Easily convinced to switch truth for a lie, confidence into compromise, and certainty for substitution, it always begins with a lie. The enemy is really convincing. If he can confuse us, it is just enough to convince us that maybe just maybe grace is not enough and weakness cannot be overcome.

 

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (NLT) We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.

 

I am only human. We are human. BUT, we do not wage war as humans do. We must win the battle in our mind so that our heart is free to pursue the Lord completely. What is God’s Mighty weapons? Where can I find that thing that will knock down the strongholds of human reasoning? What has the power to destroy false arguments? What can destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God? It is the Word of God. It is like a two-edge sword carefully cutting away the lies that have bound us to expose the Truth that frees us. (Hebrews 4:12) God’s Word is like the lamp on the surgeon’s head that allows us to see inside the deepest cavity of our mind removing the cancerous thought or idea eating away at our faith, killing our dreams and crushing our hope. (Psalm 119:105) Every thought or idea that is contrary to God’s Word, His Will or His Way is rebellious. Anything that is contradictive the nature and character of Christ is ungodly. How can we capture that which we are not aware of?

 

Have you ever been duped or tricked by another person? Has someone fooled you? It makes you feel really gullible. You should have known better but you fall for it every time. My husband is a jokester. He is always teasing somebody and he is really good at it. The man is very convincing so that even when I tell myself not to believe him, I do and he gets me every time. He has effectively created a new generation that act just like him. The problem is that now when he is serious, I tend not to believe him. I am afraid that he is joking with me.

 

I Peter 5:8-9 (NLT) Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.

 

In Job 1, the enemy came before the Lord and He asked satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the Lord, “I have been patrolling the earth, watching everything that’s going on?” He prowls around like a roaring lion. He is looking for the person who believes his lie. He wants the one who cowers to his roar. Is that you today? Is the enemy whispering fearful thoughts into your mind? Is he telling you things that are contrary to God’s Word but ignorance keeps you from discerning it? You can overcome ignorance with knowledge. A persistent pursuit of knowledge soon becomes understanding. Understanding applied to life is wisdom. Wisdom leads to better choices and confident thinking. The thoughts permitted to exist and remain in our heart and mind dictation the outcome of our life. Those who choose to study God’s Word and saturate their mind and mediate on it, will have a base of knowledge that overcomes the lie for good. Hosea 4:6 warns that people are destroyed because they do not know me. God sent His Word to you. Jesus died so that God’s Word would come to pass in our life. We must believe it wholeheartedly. This begins with a made up mind.

 

2 Timothy 2:15-16 (AMP) Study and do your best to present yourself to God approved, a workman [tested by trial] who has no reason to be ashamed, accurately handling and skillfully teaching the word of truth. 

 

During those times that I have been tested by trial, I find that when I come boldly to the Throne of God it is usually recanting everything that His Word has promised that is not what I am experiencing. Our youngest daughter was supernaturally and miraculously healed of asthma. After weeks of begging and pleading with the Lord and our fiftieth visit to the doctor, enough was enough. I let God have it. What did I do? I told Him everything His Word had to say about healing and faith. I cannot even remember my tirade but I would like to think the Lord saw it as boldness and confidence in His Word rather than an oversized temper tantrum. Essentially, I asked Jesus if He would allow such an intrusion in the life of His Child. Well evidently not, because since that moment – there has not been a single episode of the disease without a single wheeze or rattle.

 

Without studying God’s Word diligently and thoroughly, we will never fully take advantage of the rights of our salvation. Ignorance will steal from us those things that God has already provided for those who love Him and seek Him wholeheartedly. What if the greatest desire of your heart is simply undiscovered? The Word of God feeds the Spirit of God in me. When we stop the stinking thinking our mind is starved. We know the Truth and hence we are set free. Are you free today? Or in bondage to fear and emotional overload? The Keys to the Kingdom unlocked that door. To come to Jesus and not know His Word is to stand behind a closed door thinking it is locked when all you had to do was push not pull. Obedience is found in God’s Word. Encouragement is provided by the Lord. Those who decide to make God’s Word a mainstay will remain steadfast in the Presence of God both now and forevermore.

 

I Corinthians 14:33 (NKJV) For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

 

Hebrews 12:1-2(NKJV) Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

 

Are you confused today? Not sure what to do next? Uncertain of the future? Don’t even know what to pray anymore? Let me encourage you…no let me challenge you…get into the Word of God spending significant time there. The enemy will always give you a plausible excuse to not read God’s Word, study it or pray over it. He doesn’t want you to understand the depth and capacity of God’s Love for you. He wants you to feel that grace is limited rather than limitless. He wants you to see your faults and failures rather than the future and hope that the Lord has already provided you.

 

God is the God of Peace. Jesus is the Author and Finisher of Faith. Who better to look to for guidance? Who else could better explain the Word to our heart and mind than the very spirit of Jesus Christ – the Holy Spirit? We have been given everything we need to live a life of godliness. We can have everything God’s Word tells us is ours. We can do everything that it tells us we can do. We can live in the impossible realm called hope that changes our circumstances and resolves every situation. But you cannot go where you do not know exists? You cannot have that which remains hidden. A lie ends where truth is discovered. Once the Truth resonates inside of us the lies of the enemy are revealed one by one. He cannot trick us as easily. We know what to look for so the trap does not ensnare us.

 

I Corinthians 2:13-16 (NIV) This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words. The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments for, “Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

 

Your mind can work with the Word of God or it can work against the Spirit of God. It all depends how you manage your thoughts. We study many things. Okay, maybe it would be more appropriate we “Google” many things. You-Tube will provide millions of “how-to” videos on just about anything that you want to know how to do. Yesterday I was trying to figure out the percentage of increase. I have been out of school about three decades so I needed a refresher. How about the little gem called “Wiki-How”? The website didn’t just tell me how to do it but showed me every step of the way. When Jesus left us to sit at the Right Hand of God, He did not leave us alone. He gave us the Holy Spirit. We have the Mind of Christ.

 

Just because we have something doesn’t always mean that we use it. We bought our leather couch about twelve (12) years ago. It came with a special care kit that I stuck in the hall closet with all the other cleaning supplies. Last year, our daughter managed to get dark brown hair dye all over the couch. Ugh! I wiped up as much as I could but since our sofa is light tan – it left a horrible stain. Finally, I remembered the kit hidden high on the shelf. Inside was this little stick that looked like a glue stick labeled stain remover. As I began to rub the stick over the stain, remarkably it disappeared. I dare to say that if you came to the house that you would not even be able to tell where it once was located. This is the same with the Mind of Christ that we are given. Unless we exercise faith and hope in pursuing and utilizing this new way of thinking, it will have no impact on my life. To say I believe is one thing, but until it is reflected in the way that I think, speak and live – I am more than likely still holding on to a lie or two.

 

God is so good. His Love unfailing and unchanging. His Grace more than enough to cover our deepest darkest secret. It is tough to believe in God so perfect while I am so imperfect. Unworthiness is hard to overcome without knowing and understanding the character of God and nature of Jesus Christ. His Spirit will work His Word into our heart and mind as a shield. It will protect us from believing the ever so convincing lie of the enemy. God’s Word is a light that reveals the truth. When we know the Truth, we will not fall for a lie again. It is important that we take the Word of God, study it, dissect it, marinate over it, meditate on it, and continually dive in it day after day after day. We must know the Truth to remain free from every lie! The only thing the enemy has to use against you are lies. Be encouraged today that no weapon formed against us will prosper! We have the mind of Christ. God’s Word breaks every barrier to our freedom, removes ever boundary to our blessing, and allows us to be confident that we will see the Goodness of God in the land of the living. (Psalm27:13)

Joshua 1:8-9 (NLT)

“Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

 

Mahatma Gandhi said, “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” There is powerful truth in this statement. I believe there would be a modern day revival unmatched by history if the Body of Christ thought, spoke and acted united with the Word of God. You know that book on the shelf covered with dust, or the application on your cellphone that gives you an excuse to look at it during a Sunday Service. The Word of God is alive. (Hebrews 4:12) It is powerful. It is also a dangerous weapon as it can cut to our heart leaving us exposed. So the Church considers ignorance to be bliss. What if we knew the treasure that we are missing by ignoring God’s Wisdom to be led around like fools? These words may sound harsh, but they are not as cruel as all that we are missing simply because we do not take time to think about the Word of God. How can we apply what we do not know? How can we find a destination without proper direction? We want to be prosperous and successful but do not study the Instructions left for our life. Blindly groping in the darkness calling for God’s Grace when all along it has been given so we are free to find our way into the Light of His Love and accomplish all that He planned and purposed long ago. We will never find true satisfaction and total contentment in Jesus Christ until we take the time to meditate on His Word, speak what it says, and do what it tells us. We will not only discover happiness, but be filled with unspeakable joy and overflowing peace.

Isaiah 58:4-6 (NLT)

What good is fasting when you keep on fighting and quarreling? This kind of fasting will never get you anywhere with me. You humble yourselves by going through the motions of penance,
bowing your heads like reeds bending in the wind. You dress in burlap and cover yourselves with ashes. Is this what you call fasting? Do you really think this will please the Lord?  “No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people.

 

Do you really think “this will please the Lord”? One simple thought carried out through our day that will lead to the pursuit of understanding, knowledge and wisdom. Religion is quick to tell us what to do, how to do it, when to do it, and what will become of it. But a true bonded relationship to Jesus Christ requires us to follow Him. I do not believe that the Lord always follows mainstream organized religion because when it is manmade it will always be flawed. Every single person who has called on the Name of Jesus Christ to save them and have decided to follow Him have been given the Holy Spirit as a guide. Your heart and head must be in agreement. You must believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, died for our sin, rose on the third day and is seated at the Right Hand of God. This is a thought process that leads to a decision. Your heart cannot make it alone but your head must be involved. Love without a decision has no commitment and will never be true love. Love is more than an emotion or impulse. It may be drive that gets you there but it is the profound decision to stay in love that keeps us there. We cannot surrender our heart to Christ without our mind. This does not necessarily settle the inner conflict of sinful nature and Spirit of God but it gives us a fighting chance to find faith and confident hope.

Psalm 119:25-32 (NLT)

I lie in the dust; revive me by your word. I told you my plans, and you answered. Now teach me your decrees. Help me understand the meaning of your commandments, and I will meditate on your wonderful deeds. I weep with sorrow; encourage me by your word. Keep me from lying to myself; give me the privilege of knowing your instructions. I have chosen to be faithful; I have determined to live by your regulations. I cling to your laws. Lord, don’t let me be put to shame!  I will pursue your commands, for you expand my understanding.

 

Psalm 119 is all about the Word of God. It is filled with encouragement to read, meditate and act on God’s Word. It expresses the value and worth of His Infinite Knowledge. It is the longest book in Chapter in the Bible with 176 verses. God’s Word revives us. It gives us answers. It teaches us what God has decreed and mandated for our life. Helps us understand His Commandments and why He made them.  God’s Word encourages us when we are down hearted. I love this part – the Word of God keeps me from lying to myself or accepting someone else’s lie as the Truth. This is so important with all the doctrines in the world. The Word of God allows us to make a conscious and informed choice as to whether or not we will follow Jesus Christ. Wise people think before they act. (Proverbs 13:16) The heart of the godly thinks before it speaks a single word. (Proverbs 15:28) A wise person thinks about death and its impact on their life. (Ecclesiastes 7:4) The Lord goes so far as to warn us not to be like everyone else. (Isaiah 8:11) He does not want us to blindly follow Him around groping in the darkness but rather to have bold faith and confident hope in who He is, what He came to do, and what He is doing in each of us. The Word of God working in us in unison with the Power of God who is His Spirit will change our heart and mind. The Lord told the woman at the well that we would worship in Spirit AND Truth. I believe this is what He was telling her about. (John 4:23)

Romans 8:5-6 (NLT)

Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will.

 

Our mind is in constant conflict with our sinful nature that wants its own way. The Spirit of God is working to transform our thoughts to agreement with God. (Romans 12:2) The Lord tells us as believers that we are not to think like everyone else does. (Isaiah 8:11) We live in a world of Christians who have closed their eyes and shut their mind to God’s Word and live on the fringe of God’s Love and Grace rather than diving in completely. (Isaiah 44:18) We must think carefully about what the Lord tells us in His Word, allow the Holy Spirit to impress it on our heart and in our mind to be transformed by His Love, Mercy and Grace. To make it plain – we have got to think about it. We can no longer plunge our head in the sand when life gets tough but look to the Word of God written in our heart and mind. It will change our life if first we allow it to change us. God is ready to heal us, deliver us, revive and restore us (Isaiah 38:19-20). What if everything you hoped for, dreamed about and longed to have were being held up by your inability to simply step out in faith and trust Jesus? The truth is just that. We have not because we ask not. When we ask we do not believe. We do not believe because we do not know Who we serve or even why we are serving Him. Ignorance is not bliss. It is a curse that robs God’s Blessings, Prosperity and Success from us. It’s like leaving every window in your house unlocked, the door wide open, and a sign in your front yard that tells the world you are on a two-week vacation so please come take everything we own. How can you be indignant when you come home and your place has been ransacked? Any believer who does not think about the Lord or meditate on His Word can expect nothing less from the enemy who wants to steal, kill and destroy our life. To think carefully allows us to stop sinning (I Corinthians 15:34) and bar the gaps in our life where the enemy has been slipping in until we can hold all the prosperity and success the Lord is sending our way!

Colossians 2:7-8 (NLT)
Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.

You will never have deep roots in a firm foundation of faith without the Word of God. There will be no foundation to build your life on without knowing Jesus Christ. When you discover the Truth, it just gets better and better. No really it does. It is then that we discover that God’s Word, His Way and His Will is all about His Unfailing and Unconditional Love for us. When we are confident in God’s Love, it doesn’t matter what anyone else says we know that He loves us and can discern the Truth from any lie. This is to our advantage. We are told to think about the things of Heaven not of this earth. (Colossians: 1-3) I challenge you (and me) today to spend an equal amount of time in the Word as I do anything else I do on a daily basis. If you like to watch television, then divide that time in equal parts. Perhaps you like to read, again give equal parts to both. If this is too aggressive, then tithe your time and just give God’s Word a tenth of your time. Don’t just read it. It’s not about reading it cover to cover. This is about taking a Truth from it and thinking about it over and over in your mind. My husband loves football. He likes to read the posts online about the game of the week. He watches the television broadcasts etc. But every morning he gets up well before dawn to read, study and meditate on the Word of God and pray about it. We must think about God’s Word to change our mind and open our hearts to all that He has for us. It is not the Law. It is our privilege! This is not a mandate to do anything different other than just think about the Lord and His Word. Meditate on its meaning. Let it sink in to your brain. If you do, I guarantee you it will change your life. You will be successful and you will prosper just like God promised Joshua and the Children of Israel!

Philippians 4:7-9 (NLT)

Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.
