Romans 12:2 (TLB) Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but be a new and different person with a fresh newness in all you do and think. Then you will learn from your own experience how his ways will really satisfy you.
Are you struggling with the new “quarantine diet”? A friend posted a meme on social media that said, “Breaking news – wearing a mask at home is highly recommended. Not so much to prevent COVID-19 but to stop eating.” How true? This morning, I was feeding our dogs. After both were happily devouring their kibble, I reached down to pat our Lab on the back. Much to my chagrin, I noticed that she is not immune to the new quarantine diet and my children have been feeding her quarantine snacks, too. Oh my! Are you eating your way through this too? Food offers comfort mentally more than physically during troubled times. Who hasn’t eaten right out of the carton on particularly difficult nights? Or destroyed an entire bag of Doritos in a panic? Maybe your comfort is found in something else. It is important to identify our source of comfort to be sure it is beneficial to our body, mind AND spirit.
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world…”
I am not a hoarder. I did not think I was overbuying food and supplies for our household until the freezer in our garage barely shut. It is hard to not get caught up in the cycle of fear and panic circling around us. We go with the flow. Follow the herd. It is our human nature. It is vital to a prospering soul to feed it properly during these times of mass pandemonium and widespread panic.
“Be a new and different person with a fresh newness in all you do and think.”
Would it not be fantastic to come out of quarantine renewed, refreshed and revitalized – body, mind and spirit? To be in better health than before, to have found greater peace and to be revived in our soul. I think that is the goal of this call to “be still and know” (Psalm 46:10) that we have found ourselves in. Routines are wrecked. Schedules upended. Households huddled together. This trial can become an opportunity for those who decide to change their routine for the better and reorganize their schedule.
Psalm 34:8-11 (TLB) Oh, put God to the test and see how kind he is! See for yourself the way his mercies shower down on all who trust in him. If you belong to the Lord, reverence him; for everyone who does this has everything he needs. Even strong young lions sometimes go hungry, but those of us who reverence the Lord will never lack any good thing.
Then you will learn from your own experience how his ways will really satisfy you.
Have you ever noticed that if someone opens a wrapper, you suddenly want a snack? It happens in our office all the time. I can be perfectly content working away the day but the minute she opens something, I am suddenly craving whatever it is she has. Human nature works just like that. Well, I guess animals do to because the dogs come running at the same sound. I suppose we are all subject to such a phenomenon. My point is this – it is easy to get wrapped up in the world. Especially right now, to conform our thinking and make our decisions based on current conditions. It is a dangerous trap of the enemy.
In some translations, Psalm 34:8 says to “taste and see” the Goodness of God. You are what you eat. Your diet impacts your body and is evidenced in your health. The things allowed to saturate your mind will influence your emotions and decide how you feel about things. What you feed your soul will determine whether you live by faith or fear. What you believe determines whether you respond by faith or react in fear. A prospering soul is nourished by the Word of God and the Holy Spirit. We are invited to test (taste) and see how kind God really is. To see for ourselves the way His Mercies, Grace, Blessings and Promises shower down on all who trust Him. Our eyes must be focused on the Lord. Our hearts set on seeking Him. Our mouths open only to praise and worship the Living Loving God who cares for us. Our hands to help when we can through obedience. Our feet to stand when invited to be still and know. This time of “quarantine” will make or break humanity. The greatness of this opportunity is that you and I get to choose our course. Decide the pathway of life that we will follow. Will we allow to make us better through this trial or decide to follow the crowd?
You belong to God. You stand under King Jesus. His Spirit is within you. There is no situation or circumstance that will prevail over the power and authority of the Triune God who is holding you and the ones you love in His Mighty Hand. Do you trust Him today? Are you seeking His Face to steady you? Instruct you? Guide you? Lead you? Direct you? We must fix our thoughts today. Stop feeding our face, fears and the roaring lion. It is time to decide to fix our eyes on Jesus – He is our Champion! (Hebrews 12:2) To surrender our body, mind and spirit to the Living God all over again. Stop running and stand still and know that He is God! It is an invitation and tremendous opportunity to cultivate the fruit of His Spirit in our life and come out better than before! Feed your faith today!
Galatians 5:22-23 (TLB) But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control; and here there is no conflict with Jewish laws.
