Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV) Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Yesterday, I talked about the pruning process of God. Well, today I offer the pruning prayer. God wants to do exceedingly abundantly more than you can think, ask or imagine. (Ephesians 3:20) It is a process that begins within us according to His Power. However, the Lord will not do anything to change us without a proper invitation. He has given us a free will. (John 8:36) True to His Nature as God who does not lie (Titus 1:2) or change His Mind (Numbers 23:19) – He will not strip us of such a provision as free will or prune us without permission.
Heading back to our daughter’s house, there is a giant grapefruit tree bursting with fruit in various stages of development. A couple months ago, my husband and I were helping them in the yard. The tree was cut way back as it was overtaking the driveway. A massive pile of limbs left for the yard waste pickup. Well, our best efforts did not stop its new growth. In fact, I dare to say, it is larger than it was a short time ago. It is literally covered in fruit with branches straining to bear the weight of its productivity. What if this is what God wants to do for you and me? What if He promises that if we endure the pruning that our life will burst forth with abundance?
Well, there is a pruning prayer! Tucked away in Psalm 139 is a prayer that will change and transform our life including every branch not just the churchy Christian looking ones! God wants to give us all His Goodness and He will take all the Glory which is fine by me. Jesus was so intent on giving us a rich and satisfying life that He died to gift us with it. Access to the Kingdom of God requires righteousness. Righteousness is given to us in the gift of Salvation through Jesus Christ. Access to the Kingdom is only possible when He becomes our Lord and our residency in Heaven firmly established. The gate is narrow and there are certain things that prohibit us from certain privileges that godly living has to offer so by asking the Lord to prune us – our life will fit through the door to the things reserved only for God’s Children.
Galatians 5:22-24 (NIV) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
The fruit God produces in our life through His Spirit are described in Galatians 5. Too often our request of God are natural not supernatural. We want consumable fruit for us rather than becoming fruit producers. God is our Source. He always works from the inside out. God is interested first and foremost in soul prosperity. It doesn’t mean that He will not be our provider or bless us with certain things in our life. Not at all the case, His Goodness is for the land of the Living. (Psalm 27:13) However, God will do absolutely nothing that will compromise your soul.
John 15:7-8 (NIV) If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
The word “fruit” in this passage means everything done in true partnership with Christ. This is why we cannot do anything fruitful apart from Him but to abide in Jesus causes us to bear much fruit showing ourselves to be His Disciples. The Fruit of the Spirit, as indicated by these words, can only be cultivated by those who possess the Holy Spirit. There are many good people who do good things but only godly people who have accepted Christ and are filled with His Spirit can produce spiritual fruit. The kind that truly provides satisfaction and fulfillment as promised in God’s Word.
So will you pray the pruning prayer with me today?
Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. In the Mighty Name of Jesus I pray! AMEN!
Warning: God is faithful. If you pray this prayer, He will come in and mess up things like comfort, convenience and control. He will wreak havoc on your mind, will and emotions creating chaos of normal living to cut away all that is keeping you from abundant life. Pruning is painful. However, healing comes through pain. It will be worth it when your life is bursting froth with good fruit that provides the immeasurably more life of exceeding abundance that you have been praying for!
