Matthew 16:19 (AMP) “I will give you the keys (authority) of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind [forbid, declare to be improper and unlawful] on earth will have [already] been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose [permit, declare lawful] on earth will have [already] been loosed in heaven.”
My keychain is a chaotic mess. I have just about every shape and size of key possible. Yet, I have no idea what doors each one will open. It’s really ridiculous. There are keys to my house, office, parent’s house, kid’s house, and church. However, there are way more keys on that little ring than those accounted for. I am afraid to purge it lest I lose the one key I need in any given instance. Keys represent responsibility. At least, that is why I tend to hesitate to accept them. If I have the key, I have the potential power of access. But if I am clueless to the door it will open, the key is useless to me.
Jesus told Peter that he would be given the keys of the kingdom of heaven. The potential of such authority would give him a different level of power on the earth. This was before Peter denied Jesus three times or Jesus died on the cross. I am quite certain that in that moment with Christ that Peter had no earthly idea of the heavenly responsibility to be bestowed on him.
The Message Bible translates this scripture to read:
“And that’s not all. You will have complete and free access to God’s kingdom, keys to open any and every door: no more barriers between heaven and earth, earth and heaven. A yes on earth is yes in heaven. A no on earth is no in heaven.”
Who doesn’t want complete and free access to God’s Kingdom? To experience every fruit on the tree belonging to His Spirit including, but not limited to, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. To exhibit Christ’s Authority to overcome all obstacles and His Power to live a “more than enough” life. To encounter every blessing and promise associated with His Purpose for us. The Kingdom of Heaven is bursting with the life and lifestyle that God prescribed for you and me before our birth at the time of creation. (Psalm 139:16) It is all there. Every realm of influence that was predestined for us has a door and Christ has given us the key. We have the potential to live our purpose in the Lord with the access granted fully by our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ.
Now what? Alignment. Access requires alignment. Have you ever received a key that was not cut correctly? When being honed a certain groove in the new key was not made to match the master key? You know where this is going but come along anyway. You tried it in the lock and couldn’t slide it in all the way. Or maybe with a little bit of work, it made it in the slot but would not turn the lock to grant you access. What did you do with the key? Perhaps, like most, if you had the original key then you compared the two. If it did not line up correctly, it probably went back to the hardware store to be recut properly. We have the power and authority of Christ on the inside of us. He has given us every spiritual blessing possible hiding it in His Kingdom for our use. He handed us the keys to His Kingdom with completed and free access. What are you doing with the keys to the Kingdom today?
The problem is not in the Giver or His Giving. The difficulty in accessing God’s Kingdom is that most people live out of alignment with God. The Word of God, His Instructions and His Commandment is given so that our life can be in alignment with God’s Plan. His Grace is enough to overcome every weakness. However, one cannot live their own way and still have God’s Way in all things. It is not only illogical but impossible. I serve an Impossible God who does amazing things. He will not ever work contrary to His Word. He will not change His Will due to my unwillingness to align my life with His Plan. A key will only work if it is in alignment with the lock. The lock’s purpose is to secure that which belongs to another. It is put in place to limit access. We have been handed the keys to God’s Kingdom – we can set loose its power in our life and see His Glory simply by using the properly to release Heaven on the earth.
2 Corinthians 6:13-14 (AMP) Now in the same way as a fair exchange [for our love toward you]—I am speaking as [I would] to children—open wide [your hearts] to us also. Do not be unequally bound together with unbelievers [do not make mismatched alliances with them, inconsistent with your faith]. For what partnership can righteousness have with lawlessness? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony can there be between Christ and Belial (Satan)? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?
Do not be unequally bound together with unbelievers or do not make mismatched alliances with them inconsistent to your faith. While I realize this verse was in accordance with human relationships, I believe the same can be applied to other areas in our life where the binding and loosing of Heaven are not evident. We become unequally bound to the world or the things of this world yet desire Kingdom results. I must choose where to live. I must give allegiance to the King of my Kingdom to be granted access which means that Jesus cannot just be my Savior but must also become the Lord of my life. This will change my behavior and customs. Attitudes and actions are transformed by His Word beginning with my thoughts. It changes a religion to a relationship. It allows me to become bound in a partnership with God called righteousness sealed by the Blood of His Son. In doing so, I am able to act like and experience the fullness that comes to us as Children of God. However, if I choose to live a lifestyle of mismatched alliances in the choices I make than I, by default, choose a misaligned life that limits access to the Kingdom.
Proverbs 3:1-6 (AMP) My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments; for length of days and years of life [worth living] and tranquility and prosperity [the wholeness of life’s blessings] they will add to you do not let mercy and kindness and truth leave you [instead let these qualities define you]; bind them [securely] around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. So find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man. Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him, and He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way].
Just like Peter, all believers are granted the keys to God’s Kingdom through Jesus Christ. The Word of God is absolutely true that as Children of God there is the potential to access everything that His Kingdom has in store for us. God cannot be mocked. He doesn’t lie or change His Mind. The importance of His Instructions and Commandments must not be wasted by disregard. If your deepest desire is to experience the fullness of the Glory of God, it means living a life in alignment that allows access. You have everything you need to live a successful and prosperous life. You have every spiritual blessing. God has already provided everything you need. You have it all at your fingertips. But will you use those keys to access the Kingdom or allow misalignment to rob you of its blessing? It is through God’s Word and His Will that access is achieved in the life of a believer. We must learn to bind His Word to us in order to loose the greatness hidden within us that only the Glory of God will allow. Trust is an established exchange of every area of my life for all that Christ has in store for me. It is not reliant on my understanding but fully achievable by faith. You have the keys. It’s up to you what you will do with them. I wonder if what is on the other side of the door is worth what is keeping you from it…
Proverbs 7:1-3 (AMP) My son, keep my words and treasure my commandments within you [so they are readily available to guide you]. Keep my commandments and live, and keep my teaching and law as the apple of your eye. Bind them [securely] on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.
Matthew 18:18 (AMP) I assure you and most solemnly say to you, whatever you bind [forbid, declare to be improper and unlawful] on earth shall have [already] been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose [permit, declare lawful] on earth shall have [already] been loosed in heaven.
