Small Victories & Tiny Triumphs

Small Victories

I John 5:3-5 (NLT) Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome. For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.

Each morning, I take a moment to check on the little succulent family who lives in our dining room. Positioned in the window to catch the sunlight, I pour droplets of water on them to simulate rain. The first pot was started over a year ago with leftover plants from Mother’s Day gifts. The second pot started this year is a large pot that was a gift from my daughter with my grandson’s hand prints on it. It arrived with a plant which I quickly slayed in usual fashion. So, I bought a large  and a small succulent to represent Grammy and her little man. Clever, huh? Looking over and tending the plants which are growing and thriving in my care brings a sense of peace and joy to my heart. The still small voice of His Presence whispers, “Celebrate the small victories and tiny triumphs.” Oh Lord, I get so distracted chasing impossibilities that many times I lose sight of the daily wins. Do you?

Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome.

Life is full of doing. Busyness consumes our time and energy leaving us depleted and even sometimes dry. Our spiritual life may fall victim to overwhelming burdens and task driven ideas. Our mission in life is quite simple. To love God. Keep His Commandments. This is the way of victory that leads to triumphant living. Why do we work ourselves to death? Never celebrating the small victories, tiny triumphs and little wins? The enemy uses distractions to keep our eyes off the prize and locked on the price. You get what you pay for right? We cannot pay for our salvation, redemption and renewal so it is human nature to settle for so much less. Christ died to give us victory. The enemy works relentlessly to keep us from it.

For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith.

When I planted the little plants last year, I was certain that they would die. Maybe certain isn’t the right word, but rather convinced. Why? Experience as my teacher told me that everything I plant dies. Oh come on! You know the weakness that resulted in failure that keeps you from trying again. After I was divorced, I declared that I would NEVER marry again. God placed my husband right before me. He orchestrated a conversation about Himself that would change us both forever. EVERY child of God defeats this evil world. Every ounce of truth where faith is applied produces another win. Something good will always grow from faith in God because He is good!

We achieve victory through our faith in all things. I added in all things because it is human nature to maintain some form of control in the Presence of an absolute Sovereign God who controls it all. We do it by withholding our faith in the little things and waiting for the big, impossible and overwhelming problems to give to the Lord. What if we could see victory in each step rather than waiting for the David-versus-Goliath moments? See God will slay every giant between you and His Promises. You achieve victory by placing your faith and trust in the Lord in all things even those things that seem small and insignificant to the Creator of the Universe.

Revelation 3:7-8 (NLT) “Write this letter to the angel of the church in Philadelphia. This is the message from the one who is holy and true,

the one who has the key of David. What he opens, no one can close; and what he closes, no one can open: “I know all the things you do, and I have opened a door for you that no one can close. You have little strength, yet you obeyed my word and did not deny me.

When Jesus opens something in our life – no one can close it. What He closes – no one can open. The Lord is in absolute control of our existence. He knows all the things you do… For some this might be a frightening thought, but to those who truly know the Lord – it can be a tremendous comfort. We strive to do the Will of God to live the life that He called us to…but when we fail… it is His Grace that overcomes our weakness and carries us to victory anyway. Someone needed to hear that today. I needed to hear that. His Grace is always enough for me. He watches me not to punish me but to help me live in victory each and every day for His Glory.

Zechariah 4:10 (NLT) Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.” (The seven lamps represent the eyes of the Lord that search all around the world.)

We must learn to celebrate even the tiniest sign of growth in our life. The enemy wants us to focus on our weaknesses and failures. Grace takes weakness turning it into strength. Faith takes failures turning them into our future. (Romans 8:28) Do not despise small beginnings. The Lord rejoices just to see the work beginning in our life. The “plumb line” is used to build not destroy. It is not a bat or belt used to punish us but to make sure our building is not in vain. We must embrace the Lord’s Discipline, Correction, and His Spirit’s Guidance as tools to see the life that He has promised grow from the broken pieces of a yielded life. Luke 21:19 says, “By standing firm, you will win your souls.” When was the last time you celebrated the fact that through it all – you are still standing firm. How about the fact you are standing at all? This is the beginning of living a life of victory – by celebrating every single win every single day and giving God all of His Glory.

Luke 16:10-12 (NLT) “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities. And if you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven? And if you are not faithful with other people’s things, why should you be trusted with things of your own?

Faithfulness begins and takes root in the little things. Those tiny seeds of risk planted in fields of expectation and carefully tended until something grows. It would be easy to grow impatient and leave for something prefab or premade but God has something so much better for you than that. He is growing your character for next level living – it is time you recognize that. You run for the prize with each step of your life. (I Corinthians 9:24-25) I belong to the Living God. I am His Daughter. I have victory in me because Christ lives in me and He always wins. (I John 4:4) His Spirit is leading me from victory to victory and glory to glory if I am willing to go. The willingness to win is derived by faith in Christ to lead us to it moment by moment and day by day.

Romans 8:37 (NLT) No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.

This is the declaration of the believer each day. Despite all things – I have overwhelming victory through Christ today simply because He loves me. If you really believed this statement to be true, it would change the way you live each moment of your life. A winner walks differently. A champion carries a sense of undeniable confidence. A legend doesn’t have to prove their worth. Every day is filled with small victories and tiny triumphs that go overlooked. Discontentment and dissatisfaction eat up their seed of peace that the Lord is trying to grow in your overburdened and stressed out heart. Fear of failure consumes our faith and cements our feet in the past. Worry overtakes us with heavy shackles of thoughts that may never come to pass stealing our future before it arrives. Look around you. There is always something to be thankful for. Gratefulness changes our mind as our perspective moves from the what-ifs to what is already here. You have overwhelming victory. Jesus is our victory. To celebrate Him properly and give Him the praise and honor worthy of His Name means celebrating every small victory and tiny triumph as the exceedingly abundantly more than we could think, ask or imagine unfolds. It will come to those who choose to walk in His Glory and give Him praise each day!
