Lord, Awaken Me

Lord, Awaken Me

Ephesians 5:14-17 (ESV) …For anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

“Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” An awakening can be defined as a number of things including, but not limited to, awaking from sleep, rousing or quickening; revival of interest or attention, a recognition, realization or coming into awareness of something; or even revival. Many of these definitions can apply to one’s spiritual life. Rousing, quickening or stirring of God’s Spirit within us to stir up the worthless things for removal to make room for God’s Blessings yet to come. Revival of interest or attention when our life becomes stagnant so that our purpose is not buried in lifeless pursuits rather than alive in passionate callings. To recognize that there is more to life than you are currently living and turn the realization (or revelation) into an awareness of who lives in us and is making His Way out into our ordinary life to produce an extraordinary one. And then there is the buzz word in the church today – revival. We must allow God’s Spirit to awaken our body, mind, spirit, heart and soul if our deepest desire is a new awakening that will become revival.

Awaken me, Lord

It seems so simple. As a matter of fact, the phone buzzed in the midst of my studying. It is our daughter. She did not sleep well last night and is concerned she may not wake up for school. She asked me to “Please wake her up at 6:00 AM”. I have to laugh sometimes at the imagery of God as He works to share certain thoughts and concepts. He is careful to be sure that I grasp the truth of His Word even its profound simplicity. My light is always shining. No, not because I turn it on. Christ lives in me. The Light of the world is piercing through every opening in my life. He is working profusely to make His Way out of me while exposing every shadowy weakness within so grace can be amply applied. It’s crazy that light has been invested in such shallow and broken vessels (2 Corinthians 4:7) yet that is exactly how the Lord chose to do it. It is our privilege to have Jesus living inside of us and that Christ will shine through us for all to see.

Look carefully then how you walk…

When I was very young, my parents had to secure our home with locks out of my reach. I was a sleepwalker. There were occasions when completely unconscious left the house to wander outside. As one might imagine, they were quite concerned. Consulting the pediatrician, who called it an overactive brain, they were instructed to secure the home which they did. We must not be sleepwalking Christians. Wandering aimlessly in the dark yet filled with great light. We must learn to look carefully into our Christian walk. It would be foolish to say I want to follow Jesus and then walk contrary to His Ways. Yet people do it all the time. Frustrated that His Promises are not evident in their life, many choose to walk away because of their fear, doubt and insecurity. God will do exactly as He promised to do in His Word. Christ came to give us a rich and satisfying life. The Spirit of God is His Power alive and well inside of us. It is up to us to look carefully then how (we) walk.

Not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time…

Psalm 119:148-149 (AMP) My eyes anticipate the night watches and I awake before the call of the watchman, that I may meditate on Your word. Hear my voice according to Your [steadfast] lovingkindness;Lord, renew and refresh me according to Your ordinances.

 Awaken me, Lord

God’s Word is the source of renewal and refreshing needed by believers each and every day. The Holy Spirit uses God’s Word to work on us inside and out. It is the anticipation of His Loving Kindness and Faithfulness that allows faith to plant itself in our heart fertilizing God’s Word to produce its potential inside of us. Faithfulness always produces fruitfulness. Sowing and reaping are promises. We must become committed to God’s Word. His Way. His Ordinances. These are vital to awakening our soul and allowing faith to yield its full potential in our life. We are made for the light. Not to live in darkness, or sleep in the shadows of each passing day.

Romans 1:17 (AMP) For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed, both springing from faith and leading to faith [disclosed in a way that awakens more faith]. As it is written and forever remains written, “The just and upright shall live by faith.”

When my babies were little, I would sit in their room and watch them sleep. Listening to their breathing even and steady, just overwhelmed by God’s Goodness in allowing me to be their mama. Our youngest came over and sat on my lap last night. She is an independent and outgoing teenager. We don’t see her as much anymore. She has places to go and things to do. But I asked her to come sit on my lap for just a minute, and she graciously did. Even now, she is my sweet baby girl. I long to be close to my children. Love them. Bless them.

The Lord watches us sleep. The Word of God tells us that He sings over us. He is there in the morning providing new mercies to get us through the day. His Grace is always enough whether we choose to use it or not. Are you aware of God’s Presence in each moment? See, I think that’s what He is trying to say to us today. Are you tired and thirsty? Do you need a renewal and refreshing to spring up deep within your soul? Awaken your heart and mind to His constant and prevailing Presence in your life. The Lord whispers to us. Seek me. Talk to me. Find me. Walk with me. Sit with me. Get to know me. Lord, awaken me today. To something new. Refreshing. Renewing. Restoring. Revive me again, Jesus.

Understand what the will of the Lord is…This is where it all begins and ends, friend! At the feet of Jesus! There is no other understanding or truth to will reveal the Will of God for you. The Lord longs to share His Secrets to you today. He has a perfect plan for you. It is not dependent on getting your act together but simply inviting Him to awaken something new in you today!
