Simply Obey

Simply Obey

2 John 6 (NIV) And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.

Here’s a crazy thought! God’s Power and Blessing follows someone’s obedience. If you don’t believe me, think about this. Great miracles of God followed commands such as: build an ark, lift your staff, fill your jug, gather jars, make a cake, blow your trumpet, and give a shout. And it didn’t stop there as Jesus followed His Father with directives like: take up your pallet, cast your nets, stretch out your hand, roll away the stone, go and tell, and look in the fish’s mouth. There is wonderworking power in simple acts of obedience. How often do we miss God in ordinary thinking that keeps us from extraordinary things?

God’s Goodness is for the land of the living. This life. With all the twists and turns, as well as, ups and downs. God is faithful. We must simply obey. Faith is demonstrated in full obedience to God often in the absence of human logic but rather executed in confident hope. We long for the rich and satisfying life promised by Jesus to us, however; struggle with daily alignment to His Word, Will and Way. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. He is the ONLY way to gain access to the Father and all that He has for us.

John 14:23-24 (NIV)  Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.”

To profess love for Jesus and not obey His Teaching is simply not love at all. Jesus defines love by obedience. It is the coupling of the Trinity and our soul within us. He says, “My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” God wants to establish His Kingdom in your life and mine. Love is the requirement. Not love as this world defines it – but the unique kind of commitment that is offered in marriage as two become one. The Lord wants to dwell with us. Live with us. Be with us. We must simply obey to make a place for Him. All of Him.

Deuteronomy 28 details the blessing of obedience and is quoted often. However, there is a preface and closure that cannot be overlooked for those who desire a blessed life and abundant prosperity. It begins with “if you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all of His Commands I give you today…” (vs.1) and then “If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom. Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left, following other gods and serving them.” (vs.13-14) Faith requires obedience to produce its full potential. We must strive to live according to the Word of God which requires knowing what it says and doing just that.

Luke 11:28 (NIV) He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”

The importance of obedience in no way delineates grace. The Grace of God is essential in overcoming all the inadequacies of faith in my life. I will fail. I will fall down. I will mess up. I will sin. It is the intent of my heart not to that makes grace applicable and obedience fruitful. We must strive every day to live according to God’s Written and Spoken Words to us. Jesus is the Word. To live yoked to Him means I must go with the Word. Simple obedience begins with one step that becomes a lifelong journey of faith in action and abundance galore.

Galatians 5:7 (NIV) You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth?

The enemy of our soul longs to keep us from the blessings of God. He uses fear, anxiety, stress, worry, past experiences, and insecurities to “cut in” on us and keep us from obedience to the truth. He seeks to steal, kill and destroy every good work that God has begun within us. The enemy knows that if I stop obeying God then I will forfeit certain blessings that will come from it. Faith is a race. It is not a sprint, but a marathon. The terrain can be rough sometimes but it will in no way hinder the blessing on the other side. Don’t give up on God. So what you messed up yesterday, His Mercy was new this morning and given freely to you. His Grace works best in our weakness. The Lord will NEVER leave you or forsake you and is always on your side. You must choose to simply obey to see the fullness of His Blessing today!
