Psalm 143:10 (AMP) Teach me to do Your Will (so that I may please you), For You are my God; let Your Good Spirit lead me on level ground.
Oh, this little nugget of a verse for today can speak volumes to the overwrought mind and overwhelmed heart. In fact, David wrote in the very same psalm, “my spirit is overwhelmed and weak within me” and “my heart grows numb.” Burnout is a reality. It happens to the best of us. It has to good people who are trying to do good things. Crammed schedules and rigid routines marked by filling every time slot on the calendar makes us fair game for the enemy. He will crush us under the pressures of life if the words “teach me to do Your Will” are not heeded. More than that, it must be the daily meditation of our heart “not my will but thy will be done.” Jesus instructed us to pray, “thy Kingdom come, thy will be done.” It was not a godly power trip but rather an invitation to live a balanced life of goodness, service and rest. Godliness and holiness is not religious. If properly done, it will provide complete satisfaction and rest to the believer.
Teach me to do Your Will
David asks the Lord in Psalm 143:8, “Let me hear Your Lovingkindness in the morning for I trust in You.” I cannot stress the importance of starting your day in God’s Presence. To come to Him with your ideas, lists and responsibilities. To humbly enter your quiet place where you seek His Quiet Place and listen for the still small whisper that is the Voice of God. He longs to help you. He wants to instruct you. He wants to guide you to the shadow of His Wings so you are fully provided for and protected as you begin another chaotic day. This is how we learn to do His Will. Intimacy with the Lord in time spent in His Word, prayer and stillness. The enemy wants to steal, kill and destroy the effort you put forth today. But the grace of God is sufficient to release His Power into our weakness so no matter what the weapon forged against us is – we will overcome.
(so that I may please you), For You are my God
It is critical that each one of us examine the things done in life to determine who it is that it is done for. Everything I do as a believer should be for the Glory of God. However, there are plenty of opportunities to do good things that are not God things. We must do what we do to please God first. What I have found is that when I am walking in alignment with the Father and His Son – the Spirit enables me to please others. By walking in the love, peace and joy that only God can give us through His Son – Jesus, people notice. When all hell breaks loose, and you don’t fall apart – they will gravitate to you. You have something desirable in you. His Name is Jesus. But He must be on the throne of our heart and the priority of our existence to allow His Influence to permeate and dominate our life. Who are you trying to please? Win favor with? Get closer to?
Let Your Good Spirit lead me on level ground.
Finally, probably the hardest of all is allowing the Holy Spirit to lead our life. To lead us from victory to victory. To guide us from glory to glory. God has good things in store for us. His Way is not our way. His Thoughts so much higher and broader than our own. The Lord wants to “level” our life. Peaks and valleys are inevitable. There will always be highs and lows. The key is living in the Presence of God so that no matter where you are His Spirit is in charge. This begins only when trust is involved. We must trust God’s Purpose, Plan and Provision in our life. We must pursue His Presence even if it means giving up something else in our schedule. It is not God’s Plan for us to live chaotic, overwhelmed and overwrought lives. In fact, those who live in the Presence of God should thrive in the Shadow of His Wings. They will run and not grow weary. They will mount up on wings of eagles high above the circumstances and conditions plaguing their life. Why? God is just that good!
Are you wrestling tight schedule or overburdened routine looking for rest? Quiet. Peace. Joy. Contentment. Busyness has a way of draining all our energy for little to nothing in return. God has a plan for your life that will meet and exceed your personal and professional expectations. He does not heap the burden of performance and control on us but invites us to surrender to His Will each day and He will lead us to destiny. You must only trust and believe enough to seek, pursue and follow. Lord, I give this day to You. Your Kingdom come; Your Will be done in my life. Teach me to follow your Good Spirit. I want to go where you are leading me. Teach me…
