Psalm 23:4-6 (NKJV) Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.
The journey of life carries us to many diverse places. It would be wonderful to think that hardship is escapable once one finds Christ and invites Him in. However, there are still trials and temptations to overcome. Faith is not practical. In fact, it is probably the most impractical choice to believe in someone who you cannot see to guide you through difficulties and challenges. Without faith, there is no future. With faith, the future is still uncertain in that the end is not clearly visible. So we must keep our eyes on Jesus who is the Author and Finisher of Faith. He is the Alpha and Omega. He is the victorious one who is mighty to save. He seeks to do the impossible for us. To open the floodgates of Heaven releasing blessings too great to contain that will overflow in our life. He fights for us. He follows us. He is indeed the Good Shepherd.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
How does one walk by faith? Not to make it simple or downplay its intensity, but one step at a time. There is a reason only a mustard seed of faith is required for it is too difficult to obtain and priceless as a commodity that if a human can muster just a tiny bit – it will change our life forever. David is clear in his representation of walking with the Lord. There will be hills and valleys. There will be highs and lows. Some will be physical obstacles to overcome. Most will be strongholds of the mind and rational think that must be overcome. Too often our relationship with God is left in a spiritual realm rather than grabbed hold of for practical application.
The rod and staff of God is His Word. Jesus is the Word who came wrapped in flesh to demonstrate God’s Love for us and finish the work that would be called salvation. His birth, life, death and resurrection all significant parts of the process that is required for our faith to live and breathe within us. The very Presence of God is in His Word. The essence of life and overcoming power scripted to be impressed upon our heart and change our perspective in life. How does one accomplish such a feat? To fill our hearts so full of faith that fear and anxiety are eradicated and doubt satisfied by Truth of Who He is and what He will do in the life dedicated and devoted to walking with the Lord. God’s Word, His Way and His Promises cannot become our companion, guide and comfort until Jesus (the Word) becomes the foundation of our life.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.
Bad things happen to good people. The unthinkable rises up to present unmet expectations to ensnare us in the lie of the enemy that God does not care. To some it may be the lie that God is punishing you. Or your inner man telling you that you just aren’t good enough. Any lie that limits the Kingdom robs the Lord of the opportunity to bless you. The Lord prepares a table in the presence of your enemies. He has anointed your head with oil. Stop right there. This is not the same anointing of that which represents priestly anointing. Oh no, this is the oil of favor and excellent hospitality. God is not throwing you a picnic but hosting a mighty banquet. The comfort previously referred to is not casual sympathy. God is well aware of your broken heart and is preparing you to experience greater favor than ever before and all the enemy can do is stand back and watch. There will always be giants in the land. But the greatest giant to overcome is that of doubt. The mountain in our mind that allows our circumstances or current situation or present trauma to take our eyes off the Lord. We must keep walking, following, obeying and believing even when fighting for our faith is the greatest battle to overcome. It is surely the most rewarding.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.
God’s Goodness is for you. Not just once and awhile, but you have a heavenly inheritance that is accessed by faith alone. Faith in God over every fear and seeming uncertainty in your life. The best way to overcome the current lie flung at you by the enemy is to begin praising and thanking the Lord for what He has already done. To begin meditating on and reciting His Word back to Him. To look above the trial into the eyes of Jesus who is staring at you intently today. He is reaching for you. Will you reach for Him? Will you trust Him…one more time? The “But God” miracles happen in the midst of the impossible. When faith seems impractical and hope irrational – it is when the Great I AM shows us His Glory! Ultimately it is through each tiny footstep marked faith that life is endured and the prize obtained. It is in this journey that we meet Him face-to-face and dwell in the House of the Lord forever. Amen and Amen.
Whether you are currently in the depths of the valley or climbing the rough side of the mountain? You will make it to the end by faith that endures the ups and downs of life. You can trust the Lord because He is faithful. His Grace is sufficient for you. When your faith fails you, no worries. He is always faithful. Nobody is perfect. It is the Lord who perfects us making us worthy of the promise and empowering us to win. Stop looking around and look up. The Lord is with you. You will not fail! You are a giant killing overcomer by faith. The faith that makes all things possible in His Name.
Psalm 121 (NKJV) I will lift up my eyes to the hills—from whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore.
