Pursue

Pursue

I Timothy 6:11-12 (NKJV) But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Have you ever tried to show a child something? Way off in the distance pointing straight to it, they still seem blind despite it being in plain view. Ever so gently, you take soft sweet little cheeks carefully turning them in the right direction. You can feel the relief when that which they are striving to see becomes clear. The release of resistance as they continue to try to look in the wrong direction but lovingly you have directed them to see that which sought after. Yeah, today this passage is kind of like that moment…

To pursue means to follow in order to overtake. It is to follow closely not at a distance. It means to strive to gain that which is desired. It means to seek with the purpose of attainment. Pursuit has purpose. It has an internal drive and desire that supersedes comfort and convenience because it must be had. This is the passion of God for us. It is the essence of faith and confident hope that presses our heart to break from normal life and traditional religion to step into an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ.

PURSUE righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. All of these things are found in Christ alone. But sometimes we become more interested in His Hand and forget to pursue His Heart. My purpose is discovered in Christ alone. The plan carefully laid out in His Word is inscribed in my heart by His Spirit. It is a pursuit of relationship that requires intimacy which means sometimes it must is a solemn engagement. Times of entrance into a secret place in Christ with whispered promises and whimsical dreams that will require all of our faith and trust to receive. It is not for everyone. The life of a believer in hot pursuit of Jesus is not going to be the fancy of most. It will be a constant laying down of our time, mind, will and emotions to consume spiritual fruit that will feed and satisfy our soul until it begins to prosper.

My only question today and the point of this brief essay is this – are you pursuing the Lord today? Has your passion grown cold? Have you lost sight of the finish line? Does it seem like it is taking forever? Today, the Father is gently reaching down from Heaven and taking your tearstained cheeks in His Hand to turn you back to Him. Jesus is right there, too. He never left you – in fact, He was right in step behind you pursuing you with unfailing love, amazing grace and overwhelming goodness just waiting for you to turn around. God is reckless in His Pursuit of us. We must become reckless in pursuing Him!

Psalm 139:1-10 (NKJV) Lord, You have searched me and known me.  You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, O Lord, You know it altogether. You have hedged me behind and before, and laid Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain it. Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me.
