Unformed Substance

Unformed Substance

Psalm 139:14-16 (ESV) I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

It was last day of the month. Opening a leather bound black journal, to the last page of the book. As I turn to find a blank page it is at the very end. With vivid clarity, I realize a new chapter of life is beginning and a new season is coming. Flipping the pages, I am in awe of the faithfulness of God. Each documented encounter with the Lover of my Soul, this culmination will go to rest with the other wide variety of journals that have been kept over the years. Through all the hills and valleys of life, I have been pursued by God’s Unfailing Love and Kindness. I have experienced highs and lows in each journey. He has been the consistency of my life. My heart is racing as I think about the height of the next mountain ahead. I wonder if there will also be a dark valley to traverse. Confidence in Christ tells me He will do it, but I know me. I am weak and impatient. Holding the worn book page after page of godly encounters, I am led to my favorite psalm.

Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. I have read this passage in many different translations, yet I think this might be my very favorite. So poetic in verse, yet profound in meaning. God saw my unformed substance. Stopping for just a moment to consider that if this doesn’t shatter the perception of perfection, what will? He was there with me in the womb carefully scripting the details of my life. He wrote them down as purpose. He delineated promises. He inscribed a plan to lead me to His Son who would take me to eternity. In that moment when cells were dividing and becoming a person, but I do not believe that the unformed substance changed magically into a flawless person at birth but rather transitioned us to the potter’s wheel for complete transformation.

To see ourselves through God’s Eyes would be to visualize an unformed substance. Incomplete without reconciliation to Christ, it is by grace that salvation is possible through faith. The process of life begins in the womb continuing to death. Every moment counts. Every second prerecorded. Every day with meaning. Every month a season. Every year essential. To truly and honestly believe that God has a plan for us, it is imperative to understand that the plan of God for us predates us and precedes us into the future. What human reasoning could even comprehend such a broad scope? Creation is born into God’s Plan not a party to it. I am created by God for God. God created me on purpose but His Completion comes at the end of this journey.

Jeremiah 29:11-13 (ESV) For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.

The Lord knows the plans that He has for you in intricate detail. He is Sovereign. God doesn’t lie or change His Mind as people often do. His Plan and purpose is written before life begins and it’s a good one. To free give a future full of hope to those set on rebellion and independence. God always has good things in store for us because He loves us and desires us. His Grace is always sufficient and never lacking. The only effort on the part of the individual is to choose His Way. To call on the Lord and invite Him to enter one’s life and take over. This is the kind of faith that begins to grow, mature and develop into a relationship of trust and confidence that allows God’s Plan to unfold and become our destiny. The choice to seek Him with all of the heart and undivided interest to obtain that which He has preplanned just for us. God has things in store for you that exceed your ability to comprehend and are exceedingly and abundantly more than you can think, ask or imagine. It is found through Christ. Faith and time must be invested to harvest the goodness of God planted in our life before our existence.

Ephesians 2:8-10 (ESV) For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1)

There is a hidden ingredient that changes unformed substance to a masterpiece. It’s called faith. Faith is the substance of the things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. It is given to us in measure but very difficult to cultivate in a hard heart and troubled mind tainted by our flesh. Life breaks our heart and exposes the need for a Savior. It is acceptance of Christ and the establishment of His Leadership in calling Him Lord that the process of reconciliation and redemption begin thereby releasing the purpose hidden by the Father within us.

Romans 8:28-30 (ESV) And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.  And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

And we know…

There have been many times that people have suggested that the content of these articles be condensed. Too many scriptures to read or it must fit on my screen. Well… after all these year in the Word of God there is just too much good stuff to limit these offerings. I will never stop digging and spreading out the treasure found in God’s Word. It is the credibility of faith. It validates the radical surrender of the known for the unknown. It leads, guides, directs, protects, encourages, and more. It tell us exactly what the Lord gives to us and that which is not for us. It is filled with precious promises too good to ignore. The Word is life. The Word is Jesus. To set aside the Word is to step away from our Savior and Lord.

“And we know that” is the statement of confidence needed to allow God to mold the unformed substance into our life into the wonderful plan that He has prerecorded for us. It takes the Word of God not for entertainment but instruction. Reading, studying, meditating, and even digesting it so it nourishes our soul and prospers our life. God’s Word is essential because it tells us that all things work together for good for those who are called according to His Purpose (YOU AND ME). It means that although life is hard and filled with struggles those who place their life in the Hands of the Master will become exactly what He predestined them to be through total trust and absolute confidence in the Plan set forth from the beginning.

James 1:2-4 (ESV) Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

God has a plan for you. What is it? He will make you perfect and complete lacking nothing. You will live with perfect peace, inexpressible joy and fearlessly once the substance of your life takes form by faith. So now what?

Jeremiah 18:1-4 (ESV) The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will let you hear my words.” So I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do.

“The word that came to (insert your name here) from the Lord, ‘Arise, and go down to the potter’s house…’” Could it be that the Master is inviting us to the potter’s shed today? Maybe for some careful working or a complete makeover? Each one knows their own heart. I am humbled by a God so vast and powerful that is conscious of me. He is not only aware of my existence but took the time to fill the pages of my life with unfailing love, overwhelming goodness and never ending grace. He is a Good God and Excellent Father who leaves no detail out of the reworking of the masterpiece that as Creator was His Intent. The Lord will do exactly as He promised and can be fully trusted with all the broken pieces of our life. If only one might step back to see that the unformed substance is still becoming what it was always purposed to be then maybe substitutions, compromises and settlement would not be so easily taken. If only the precious thoughts of God for His People could be more evident to the heart of mankind, it would shatter us all over again? Will you give God the substance of your life today? Not the superficial parts easily discarded but the hidden parts that long to be fulfilled? There are so many pages left in your book. The new season has new fruit so step out of the past and embrace it. The best is always yet to come when it is handed over to the Master.

Ephesians 1:11-12 (ESV) In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.
