Think! – A Devotion

THINK ! background

Joshua 1:8-9 (NLT)

“Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Mahatma Gandhi said, “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” There is powerful truth in this statement. I believe there would be a modern day revival unmatched by history if the Body of Christ thought, spoke and acted united with the Word of God. You know that book on the shelf covered with dust, or the application on your cellphone that gives you an excuse to look at it during a Sunday Service. The Word of God is alive. (Hebrews 4:12) It is powerful. It is also a dangerous weapon as it can cut to our heart leaving us exposed. So the Church considers ignorance to be bliss. What if we knew the treasure that we are missing by ignoring God’s Wisdom to be led around like fools? These words may sound harsh, but they are not as cruel as all that we are missing simply because we do not take time to think about the Word of God. How can we apply what we do not know? How can we find a destination without proper direction? We want to be prosperous and successful but do not study the Instructions left for our life. Blindly groping in the darkness calling for God’s Grace when all along it has been given so we are free to find our way into the Light of His Love and accomplish all that He planned and purposed long ago. We will never find true satisfaction and total contentment in Jesus Christ until we take the time to meditate on His Word, speak what it says, and do what it tells us. We will not only discover happiness, but be filled with unspeakable joy and overflowing peace.

Isaiah 58:4-6 (NLT)

What good is fasting when you keep on fighting and quarreling? This kind of fasting will never get you anywhere with me. You humble yourselves by going through the motions of penance,
bowing your heads like reeds bending in the wind. You dress in burlap and cover yourselves with ashes. Is this what you call fasting? Do you really think this will please the Lord?  “No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people.

Do you really think “this will please the Lord”? One simple thought carried out through our day that will lead to the pursuit of understanding, knowledge and wisdom. Religion is quick to tell us what to do, how to do it, when to do it, and what will become of it. But a true bonded relationship to Jesus Christ requires us to follow Him. I do not believe that the Lord always follows mainstream organized religion because when it is manmade it will always be flawed. Every single person who has called on the Name of Jesus Christ to save them and have decided to follow Him have been given the Holy Spirit as a guide. Your heart and head must be in agreement. You must believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, died for our sin, rose on the third day and is seated at the Right Hand of God. This is a thought process that leads to a decision. Your heart cannot make it alone but your head must be involved. Love without a decision has no commitment and will never be true love. Love is more than an emotion or impulse. It may be drive that gets you there but it is the profound decision to stay in love that keeps us there. We cannot surrender our heart to Christ without our mind. This does not necessarily settle the inner conflict of sinful nature and Spirit of God but it gives us a fighting chance to find faith and confident hope.

Psalm 119:25-32 (NLT)

I lie in the dust; revive me by your word. I told you my plans, and you answered. Now teach me your decrees. Help me understand the meaning of your commandments, and I will meditate on your wonderful deeds. I weep with sorrow; encourage me by your word. Keep me from lying to myself; give me the privilege of knowing your instructions. I have chosen to be faithful; I have determined to live by your regulations. I cling to your laws. Lord, don’t let me be put to shame!  I will pursue your commands, for you expand my understanding.

Psalm 119 is all about the Word of God. It is filled with encouragement to read, meditate and act on God’s Word. It expresses the value and worth of His Infinite Knowledge. It is the longest book in Chapter in the Bible with 176 verses. God’s Word revives us. It gives us answers. It teaches us what God has decreed and mandated for our life. Helps us understand His Commandments and why He made them.  God’s Word encourages us when we are down hearted. I love this part – the Word of God keeps me from lying to myself or accepting someone else’s lie as the Truth. This is so important with all the doctrines in the world. The Word of God allows us to make a conscious and informed choice as to whether or not we will follow Jesus Christ. Wise people think before they act. (Proverbs 13:16) The heart of the godly thinks before it speaks a single word. (Proverbs 15:28) A wise person thinks about death and its impact on their life. (Ecclesiastes 7:4) The Lord goes so far as to warn us not to be like everyone else. (Isaiah 8:11) He does not want us to blindly follow Him around groping in the darkness but rather to have bold faith and confident hope in who He is, what He came to do, and what He is doing in each of us. The Word of God working in us in unison with the Power of God who is His Spirit will change our heart and mind. The Lord told the woman at the well that we would worship in Spirit AND Truth. I believe this is what He was telling her about. (John 4:23)

Romans 8:5-6 (NLT)

Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will.

Our mind is in constant conflict with our sinful nature that wants its own way. The Spirit of God is working to transform our thoughts to agreement with God. (Romans 12:2) The Lord tells us as believers that we are not to think like everyone else does. (Isaiah 8:11) We live in a world of Christians who have closed their eyes and shut their mind to God’s Word and live on the fringe of God’s Love and Grace rather than diving in completely. (Isaiah 44:18) We must think carefully about what the Lord tells us in His Word, allow the Holy Spirit to impress it on our heart and in our mind to be transformed by His Love, Mercy and Grace. To make it plain – we have got to think about it. We can no longer plunge our head in the sand when life gets tough but look to the Word of God written in our heart and mind. It will change our life if first we allow it to change us. God is ready to heal us, deliver us, revive and restore us (Isaiah 38:19-20). What if everything you hoped for, dreamed about and longed to have were being held up by your inability to simply step out in faith and trust Jesus? The truth is just that. We have not because we ask not. When we ask we do not believe. We do not believe because we do not know Who we serve or even why we are serving Him. Ignorance is not bliss. It is a curse that robs God’s Blessings, Prosperity and Success from us. It’s like leaving every window in your house unlocked, the door wide open, and a sign in your front yard that tells the world you are on a two-week vacation so please come take everything we own. How can you be indignant when you come home and your place has been ransacked? Any believer who does not think about the Lord or meditate on His Word can expect nothing less from the enemy who wants to steal, kill and destroy our life. To think carefully allows us to stop sinning (I Corinthians 15:34) and bar the gaps in our life where the enemy has been slipping in until we can hold all the prosperity and success the Lord is sending our way!

Colossians 2:7-8 (NLT)
Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.

You will never have deep roots in a firm foundation of faith without the Word of God. There will be no foundation to build your life on without knowing Jesus Christ. When you discover the Truth, it just gets better and better. No really it does. It is then that we discover that God’s Word, His Way and His Will is all about His Unfailing and Unconditional Love for us. When we are confident in God’s Love, it doesn’t matter what anyone else says we know that He loves us and can discern the Truth from any lie. This is to our advantage. We are told to think about the things of Heaven not of this earth. (Colossians: 1-3) I challenge you (and me) today to spend an equal amount of time in the Word as I do anything else I do on a daily basis. If you like to watch television, then divide that time in equal parts. Perhaps you like to read, again give equal parts to both. If this is too aggressive, then tithe your time and just give God’s Word a tenth of your time. Don’t just read it. It’s not about reading it cover to cover. This is about taking a Truth from it and thinking about it over and over in your mind. My husband loves football. He likes to read the posts online about the game of the week. He watches the television broadcasts etc. But every morning he gets up well before dawn to read, study and meditate on the Word of God and pray about it. We must think about God’s Word to change our mind and open our hearts to all that He has for us. It is not the Law. It is our privilege! This is not a mandate to do anything different other than just think about the Lord and His Word. Meditate on its meaning. Let it sink in to your brain. If you do, I guarantee you it will change your life. You will be successful and you will prosper just like God promised Joshua and the Children of Israel!

Philippians 4:7-9 (NLT)

Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.
