Back to School – A Devotion

Deuteronomy 31:12 (NLT)

Call them all together—men, women, children, and the foreigners living in your towns—so they may hear this Book of Instruction and learn to fear the Lord your God and carefully obey all the terms of these instructions.

Today is the first day of the new school year for the young people in our city. Great anticipation fills the air as they prepare for a year of learning. Parents are ready to get back to the comfortable routine while children are glad to see old friends and make new ones. However, for some there is trepidation at the thought of new teachers, expectations and challenges. Time to increase knowledge and build on the foundation built the year before. Will they be ready? Will it be a smooth transition? Who knows? It is a structure of society for many years now as parents send their children off to receive an education. But learning should not be for our children only. The Bible says, “Men, women, children and even foreigners living in your towns” should be accountable to being educated in God’s Word. God is calling all of us back to school today. Not just the little ones to be presented reading, writing and arithmetic. But to discover the foundational truths that are found in the Word of God. Knowledge without truth is useless. Fear of the Lord is important to establishing life with a purpose. Learning never stops. Instruction is essential as the Truth of God is vast. As we hurry our children off to school today, may we accept the invitation of a God who desires to educate His People in His Great Love and Care for them as He fills us with His Truth and leads us with careful instruction.

Romans 15:4-6 (NLT)

Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled. May God, who gives this patience and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each other, as is fitting for followers of Christ Jesus. Then all of you can join together with one voice, giving praise and glory to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We are blessed to have a high school senior in our family this year, one who has almost finished the race and is very close to successfully completing an important stage of her education. Normally, today would be one that was dreaded for the final weeks of summer. Returning to the drudgery of early mornings and late night homework, however, this year is different. She has been very enthusiastic about finishing the race and hence embraced every moment leading up to this school year. She has become quite the encourager for her younger siblings as well. As a believer, education has the same benefit. Rather than confining learning to the subject of public education, as Children of God we must submit to constantly allowing God to teach us who He is and His Will. His Word is provided to prepare His Children for the future even it arrives tomorrow. Just as a good education is the key that opens many doors for the recipient, the Knowledge of God allows believers to open the door to the Kingdom of God. Even Jesus was continually educated by the Spirit of God. (Hebrews 5:8) Learning through God’s Word and His Spirit allows us to understand what is happening around us and respond in accordance with the future God has for us rather than randomly. Life with a purpose is found through a commitment to godly instruction. Discipline is the key. Each year, I must return my child to a place of learning to continue his/her education. It is a legal requirement. If I do not, it is considered neglect. The Lord is calling His Children back to school as well. Those who are young and have much to learn must be encouraged to learn while those who have continued in God’s Word must be the encouragers in this journey of love and commitment. Praise God for all the wonderful Godly teachers who have committed themselves to teach our children in schools around the world. Praise Jesus for the men and women of God who have learned commitment through the Word of God to pray and uplift the next generation today and reinforce these teachers who have a great task ahead of them.

Ephesians 4:20-24 (NLT)

But that isn’t what you learned about Christ. Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

Ignorance in America is inexcusable when considering the commitment to and amount of money spent on public education. Children have a legal right to an education. The opportunity for education is available to all regardless of your economic or social situation. However, it is a generational curse that must be broken to choose ignorance. As a Christian, you have been given an opportunity to experience a free education in the Promises of God. The high price was paid by Jesus Christ. His Blood is what wrote this magnificent story and made it available to you. Not to simply wash your hands and go on with your life, but to cover your entire existence and guide you to a life of consecration and obedience. God gave you a brand new life – an opportunity. Have you taken full advantage of all that the Lord is offering you today? Learning in the life of a believer is never ending. If you have not been growing in the Knowledge of God, what better time to renew your commitment to God’s Instructions? It’s back to school time…for all of us. Proverbs 18:15 says, “Intelligent people are always ready to learn. Their ears are open for knowledge.”  For some this will strike home today. God is looking for His People who are ready to learn again. He is speaking to those with ears that are open to His Instruction. Is that you? God longs to share His Precious Truth with you and inspire you to greater faith through His Word giving knowledge that will blossom into wisdom and produce this kind of faith. We must daily learn from Jesus Christ. He will renew our thoughts and attitudes. We can become holy and righteous because we were created to be like God. We just need to learn how to do it.

Philippians 4:8-9 (NLT)

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.

Be encouraged today to become an avid learner. Forsaking knowledge is a dangerous thing. God has given you His Word to guide you through the pitfalls of life and to the Promises that He has hidden there for you. The deficit of the lack of learning will drain your soul and impoverish your life, but God wants to prosper you in the Knowledge found in His Word. Recommit to learning all that there is to know about the Lord today. Leave nothing unchallenged. That’s right, leave nothing to chance. Your life is riding on it. Confirm every truth through careful study of His Instruction. You have a right to be educated in this world as well as through the Kingdom of God – take advantage of both. You are never too old to learn. It’s time to head back to school.
