Possess Your Life – A Devotion

Matthew 1:9-12 (NKJV)

But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. For this is he of whom it is written: ‘ Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You.’  “Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.

There is a saying that “possession is nine tenths of the law.” However, if you are looking for its meaning in modern day legislation it cannot be found. This phrase refers back to a precept from the Old Common Law of England. It relates to a property owner’s ability to possess, use and dispose of his own property. This is not a dispute of ownership but rather an authoritative statement that tells another person how he can and cannot utilize one’s property. It really is not a law at all although the word “law” is referenced. This old adage is simply a rule of force. The rule here is that physical possession alone establishes this measure of rightful ownership and legal control outside of court. The phrase “possession is nine-tenths of the law” does not imply that any person who controls a property is the rightful owner. What it does mean is that any person who is in possession of his rightfully owned property is the sole controller of that property and may do whatsoever he wishes without regard to what anyone else. The statement is not about true ownership but the power of possession. Who is in possession of your property today? God has given you all authority as His Child to control ownership of your life. Jesus Christ died on the Cross and handed your life back to you when He conquered death and the grave. Too often Christians relinquish control of their lives right back to the enemy who took it from them in the first place. God desires for His People to have authority over their life and maintain possession of it no matter what the cost. He paid the greatest price of all with the Blood of His Precious Son. Why do we so easily allow satan to rob us of control? The enemy will never stop battling for control of your heart, mind and body. When will you choose to take it back? It will require violence because you are dealing with an opposing force, therefore; you cannot win unless you exert energy as well.

“And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.” The battle for control of your life began long before you were born. This is a war that started generations ago. The line was drawn in the Garden of Eden when through disobedience man stepped over it and lost giving up the authority given to him expressly by God. It was from that moment that the Kingdom of God became a violent war for the soul of man until the moment that Jesus Christ gave His Life. It was then that your life became yours. Through salvation, we are given personal ownership once again. Too often it is taken for granted and through neglect the enemy steals it over and over. As he begins to control a life, it becomes more difficult to take back dominion over your property – YOU. The only way to regain your life is to take it by force. The devil is not going to hand it over simply because you asked. It will take a mighty force of prayer, diligence, strength and might to take what is yours. Sadly, we are willing to battle over a parking place at the mall or a seat in church more so than power and control of our lives. Until men and women of God choose to forcefully wrestle their lives piece by piece back from the enemy, they will have rightful ownership but no control. The result is devastated, dejected, depressed and defeated Christians who are bound to this world rather than living in God’s Kingdom and His Presence. They have become enslaved rather than empowered. What is the answer?

You have to take possession of your life. Your soul belongs to Jesus Christ and He has chosen to allow you to control it while on this earth. We are simply stewards with full rights meaning we did not have to pay for the property, however; we get full usage and benefit from it. By losing control, we have lost all of our benefits in the Kingdom. Fighting for one’s rights is not a new phenomenon. In fact, it is the reverberation of the oppressed around the world with uprisings and violence filling the headlines. People are taking their lives back in the name of freedom. Isn’t it time that you did the same? You have been given the mind of Christ. (I Corinthians 2:16) If the devil has filled your head with lies and taken possession of your thoughts, then take it back. Your body is healed and whole by the Stripes of Jesus Christ. (I Peter 2:24) But if your body is overtaken with illness after illness, then take it back. You have been given all authority, yet often struggle against shackles of bondage and oppression. (John 8:36) You have been given your life back and the tools to maintain it. Prayer and fasting will break the back of the enemy while praise and worship will drive him back. It is time to take possession of your life again. How do you secure it once you receive it? Give it back to God through Christ Jesus.

In order to live in victory, one must constantly battle to maintain control of the heart, mind and body. With each win, we must carefully secure our reward in the Lord. By working diligently to commit that which we take back from our enemy and entrust it to Jesus, we are building a fortress in His Presence that is impenetrable. All those little battles that are tearing you down and stealing what is yours will end. Though there will still be wars to fight, you will be insured victory as you partner with God for a victorious life. It is all yours already. It has just gotten away from you and it is time to take it back!

Romans 8:38-40 (NKJV)

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Nothing can separate you from the love of God through Jesus Christ unless you allow it to. All that the devil has taken from you is there for you to take back. The power and authority of God’s Kingdom are behind you. All that is left is you. Are you willing to take your life back? Do you want all that God has for you. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Repossess your life from the enemy. Start with your thoughts, your health and your joy. The enemy has no right to these things. It is time to fight to win today. Choose to violently apprehend all that your Father has given you. Possess your life!
